Prep Recap for Oct. 15: Bassett second at major race

Marshfield’s Jared Bassett finished third in an outstanding field at the State of Jefferson Invitational cross country meet on Saturday.

Bassett was timed in 17:05 on the challenging 5,000-meter course, finishing behind Ashland’s Wilder Schaaf and Crater’s Zach Elliott. Both those runners finished in 16:48.

Gold Beach’s Sydney Snook was fifth in the girls race, finishing in 20:38.

Henley’s Taylor Wallace dominated the field, winning in 19:07. Lakeview’s Ashley Baldovino was second, and was the only small-school runner in front of Snook.

Marshfield’s Jana Sadler finished 11th, with teammate Tori Scott 15th.

Team scores were not available.

Vikings 10th

Siuslaw’s girls were 10th in the Elite Division at the Adidas Invitational in Portland on Saturday.

Class 6A powerhouse Jesuit won the meet with 32 points. The Vikings were second among Class 4A schools. Molalla was eighth.

Samantha Pummer led Siuslaw with a 32nd-place effort, which placed her less than a second behind Molalla’s top two runners — the best among Class 4A schools.

Siuslaw’s boys were sixth in the Invitational Division, behind four larger schools. Travis Stevens was fifth and Joseph Campbell 12th for the Vikings.

FOOTBALL

Panthers still perfect

Gold Beach pounded host McLoughlin 39-10 in a nonleague football game on Saturday.

The Panthers, the top-ranked team in Class 3A, kept their record perfect on the season.

VOLLEYBALL

Marist tournament

North Bend had a strong showing at the Marist tounament Saturday in Eugene.

In morning pool play, the Bulldogs split with North Eugene 16-25, 25-11; lost to eventual champion Burns 13-25, 20-25; and beat Cascade, 25-14, 25-18.

In bracket play, North Bend lost two close games to Santiam Christian, 22-25, 20-25.

“I was pleased that we were competitive in our matches,” North Bend coach Les Willett said.

Alexandra Mateski had 30 kills, 22 digs and five aces during the day. Jodi Smartt had eight kills, Haley Dunham added seven kills, Katie Banta had 49 assists and eight aces, Kelly Coolen had 38 digs, and Kayla Yokbay had 17 digs.

BOYSSOCCER

UVC edges Panthers

Gold Beach shut out visiting Umpqua Valley Christian in the second half of a 2-0 loss to the Monarchs.

“UVC was not able to score at all in the second half because Gold Beach shut down their offensive drives,”said Panther coach Tamara Snook. “Our goalie, Jake Hatten, did a stupendous job and had 11 saves.”
