Monday, October 15, 2007 12:46 PM PDT

The state is encouraging nonprofit groups and government agencies to apply for 2008 Recreational Trail Program grants by sending letters of intent to the Oregon Parks & Recreation Department.

Eligible projects would include maintenance and restoration of existing trails, development and rehabilitation of trailhead facilities, construction of new recreation trails and aquisition of easements and fee simple titles to property.

Grant recipients are required to provide a minimum of 20 percent in matching funds.

 Projects must be completed and billed within two years of authorization.

Application letters should list:

• the type of trail and approximate length

• approximate total project cost;

• approximate grant request; and

• applicant contact information.

Potential applicants must send the letters to OPRD-RTP Grant Program, 725 Summer Street NE, Suite C, Salem, OR 97301. The letter of intent deadline is Nov. 2.

The application form, eligibility requirements and other information are included in the RTP Grant Manual, posted at htpp://www.oregon.gov/OPRD/GRANTS/trails.shtml. People who do not have Internet access may obtain application packets by calling (503) 986-0708; or by writing to: OPRD, Attn: RTP Grant Program, 725 Summer Street NE, Suite C, Salem, OR 97301. The final application deadline is Jan. 7.
