Marshfield started its game at Willamette with a bang, but the Wolverines then took control, beating the Pirates 37-13 and handing Marshfield its fourth straight loss.
Brogan Oswald returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for Marshfield, and Alexz Elletson added the extra point kick. But Willamette scored the next five touchdowns — all by different players.
Craig Loper extended his streak of 100-yard games by rushing for 139 yards on 24 carries, and scored the Wolverines’ first touchdown on a 45-yard run. Nate Brown added a 1-yard run to help Willamette go up 15-7 after the first quarter, and Rafael Hidalgo and Michael Calef had second-quarter touchdowns as Willamette led 29-7 at halftime.
Both teams scored in the fourth quarter, Marshfield’s touchdown a 2-yard run by back-up quarterback Kyle Tedder.
Marshfield finished with just 47 rushing yards, to 246 by Willamette. The Wolverines also had a 136-41 edge in passing yards and forced three turnovers, while giving up just one.
The Pirates fell to 0-2 in Midwestern League play going into homecoming week. Marshfield hosts 2-0 Springfield on Friday in the Pirates’ final home game of the season.
Skyline League
Powers cruises to victory
Powers got four touchdowns from Jake Stevens and won its fourth straight game, beating host Elkton 50-24 on Friday.
Stevens scored on a 14-yard pass from Kyle Blanton early in the game and later added three touchdown runs.
Blanton also had a 61-yard touchdown pass to Thomas Wagner and Wagner scored on a short run and returned a kickoff 68 yards for a score after Elkton’s final touchdown.
Stevens finished the night with 152 rushing yards on 15 carries.
Now 4-1 in league play and tied for second with Days Creek, Powers enters a critical stretch for the final three weeks of the season, all against playoff contenders, starting with Gilchrist this week. The Cruisers then visit Days Creek before hosting Camas Valley in the regular-season finale.
“We didn’t play particularly well,” said Powers coach Guy Shorb. “We’re going to have to play better next week to beat Gilchrist.”
The Cruisers have been struggling with illness, in addition to injury, on a roster that still includes just 10 players.
“We’re still healing up,” Shorb said. “Mason (Lieuallen) finally got to play some, so that was good.”
Days Creek beat Camas Valley to break a three-way tie for second place on Friday. Gilchrist is just a game back.
“It’s kind of a big log-jam there for second place,” Shorb said. “Things will come out in the next three weeks. We’re going to have to improve our blocking and tackling in the next three weeks if we hope to make the playoffs.”

Daniel Kinney rushed for 172 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries for Cascade Christian. Eight players carried the ball for the Challengers, who visit Reedsport on Friday. Bandon has a bye this week.
“Those guys are really, really good,”said Bandon coach Rod Taylor. “Our guys had fun. We gave them everything we could give them through four quarters. I’m awful proud of my guys.”
