The North Bend Police Department still is on the lookout for a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run accident on Oct. 1.

According to a North Bend Police press release, at about 9:52 p.m., Timothy Hartle, 35, of Keizer, was jogging on the sidewalk along Broadway Street near Newmark Street when he heard the sound of a car losing control behind him.

“I wished I’d have seen the car coming, I just heard it,” Hartle said, on the phone on Monday. “I had just enough time to jump and hit the windshield.”

He was taken by ambulance to Bay Area Hospital, where he was treated for a shoulder separation and released with a shoulder splint. He said he was told it would be six weeks before his shoulder healed. He also suffered a bump on the head and his upper tooth went through his lip.

Hartle said he was wearing reflective shorts and a red shirt while he was jogging.

“I was on the sidewalk, but I think I’ll go on the other side against the traffic next time,” said Hartle, who was visiting the Bay Area on business.

The suspect vehicle is a smaller dark-colored car and may have damage to the front driver’s side, windshield and hood.

Coos Stop Crime is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of suspects involved. Those interested in this case are encouraged to contact the North Bend Police Department, 756-3161.

Hit and run many years ago wrote on Oct 10, 2007 4:53 PM:

One night I heard a crash around 2 AM and when I went outside after daybreak I saw my car had been hit. On the ground was an emblem from a 1967 Ford Mustang and the color of the paint of that Mustang was on my car. Did the cops make a big deal about finding who damaged my car 30+ years ago? Did The World write up anything? Did any organization step up with a reward to catch the person who hit my car? I find it strange that it took 30+ years for a fuss to be made in the press, a reward to be offered and the police actually doing something to justify the high tax dollars spent on them and their equipment over a hit and run. Maybe if people would have been on the ball back when my car was damaged 3 decades ago and the court system along with the press had made an example of that person, then continued to do the same whenever hit and runs happened, the hit-and-run mentality that has plagued this area all these years would not be around and this jogger would either not be injured or he would have been helped by the person who hit him due to fear of the penalties or else the perpetrator would have been caught immediately due to community awareness and help, just like the community is aware of drunken drivers.

I'm glad to hear that Mr. Hartle will be ok. And I'm glad to hear that he will be jogging AGAINST traffic in the future, which is the direction he should have been jogging this time. As children, we were always taught to ride our bicycles WITH traffic and walk AGAINST traffic. I hope they catch the low life who hit him and fled - what a jerk!
