The Southwestern Oregon Community College women’s soccer team completed a weekend sweep with a 2-1 victory over visiting Highline on Saturday.
The Lakers scored both goals in the first half, each assisted by Sarah Droege.
Traci Kelley scored in the 20th minute and Rebecca Fanter added a goal in the 44th minute.
Lindsey McGlothlin scored for the Thunderbirds in the 82nd minute.
Southwestern improved to 7-5-0 and avenged a loss to the Thunderbirds during the first half of the league season. With 21 points, the Lakers are in fourth place in the NWAACC South Region, but not far behind Lane (8-3-1) and Clark (7-2-2).
Southwestern will play the first of four straight road matches when the Lakers head north to face Yakima on Friday and Olympic on Saturday.
Men tie Highline
The Southwestern men just missed a victory Saturday, when Highline scored in the 89th minute to forge a 2-2 tie.
“This has been a really good weekend for us,” said Southwestern coach Ray Fabien. “The kids played really well.
“We played a really good game. All we have to do is carry it on.”

Southwestern visits Peninsula on Friday and Pierce on Saturday.
Cross country
The Southwestern women’s cross country team had another strong weekend at the Clark Invitational.
The Lakers had three athletes under 21 minutes, while Francesca Frasier nearly broke into the 19-minute range. Frasier was the team’s top runner with a time of 20:06, good enough for 11th overall on the 5,000-meter course.
Following closely behind were teammates Tracey Melgoza, 18th at 20:32, and Jesse Ward, 20th at 20:47. Other Lakers included Abby Gillaspie (51st in 24:46) and Rachel Rameriz (54th in 25:32).
The women placed fourth as a team, finishing behind Spokane, Lane and Everett.
The men’s team ran a tough race as well, though it was without one of its strongest runners in Kameron Ulmer, who was injured in an accident earlier in the week and unable to compete.
Josh Frasier led Southwestern with a 20th-place finish in 27:23 for the 8,000-meter course. Peter Becker was 27th in 27:48 and Andrew Scott was 36th in 28:11. Other Lakers were Travis Clark (58th in 29:18), Rob Manning (66th in 32:48), John Peterson (72nd in 33:14), Chris David-Garland (78th in 34:43) and Casey Gleason (81st in 34:56).
Spokane had the first five finishers for a perfect score. Southwestern was seventh.
Southwestern will next travel to Clackamas for the Mike Hodges Invite on Saturday.
Volleyball update
After a strong start to the Pierce crossover tournament, Southwestern’s women lost twice Saturday.
Top-ranked Columbia Basin edged the Lakers in five games, 23-30, 26-30, 30-16, 30-23, 15-5, before host Pierce beat Southwestern 30-27, 30-26, 30-26.
The Lakers, 1-4 in league play, return home to face Clackamas at 7 p.m. on Friday and Mount Hood at 1 p.m. on Saturday — Southwestern’s final two home matches.
