Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams from Southwestern Oregon Community College got big home wins over Tacoma on Friday.

The squads are at home again today against Highline, the women at noon and the men at 2 p.m.

Southwestern’s men won 2-0, the Lakers’ first shutout of the season.

Eudoro Guizar scored in the 41st minute, with an assist by Taylor Checketts.

Checketts later scored in the opening moments of the second half on an assist by Zach Bennett.

“We had a really good game,” said Southwestern coach Ray Fabien. “We passed the ball around really well. We were supporting each other. The kids had a lot of energy, a lot of spirit.”

The Lakers improved to 3-6-0 and are in third place in the NWAACC South Region.

“If we can keep playing like this, as we get hopefully in the playoffs, we will be a much stronger team,” Fabien said. “Each game, we are playing better and better and better.”

The Laker women won 1-0.

Sarah Droege had the goal in the 47th minute on an assist by Chelsea Hager.

“Chelsea spotted the ball diagonally to Sarah on the left flank and she had a high-arching ball over the keeper to the back of the net,” said Southwestern coach Shaun Kohn.

Kate Tuers had the shutout and Jennifer Muchmore had a strong game, Kohn said.

“Overall, it was a good solid result for us and a good way to open the weekend,” Kohn said. “I was pleased with the way we played for 90 minutes.”

The Lakers improved to 6-5-0 with Friday’s win, and will look to avenge another loss today. Highline beat the Lakers 4-1 earlier in the season.

Volleyball crossover

Southwestern’s volleyball team swept three of its four matches at the Pierce Crossover Tournament on Friday.

“We’re rolling along pretty good,” said Southwestern coach John Speasl. “Everybody got some playing time in.”

The Lakers lost to host Pierce 23-30, 30-28, 13-15, and then swept Skagit Valley (30-21, 30-23), Grays Harbor (30-15, 30-18), and Blue Mountain (30-26, 31-29).

Hannah Singleton had 30 kills, 10 solo blocks and four assisted blocks to lead the Lakers. Christie Wisel had 20 kills, Dena Helme added 17 kills, and Kasey Orr had 13 kills and eight solo blocks. Ashley  had 35 digs, Jessica Bond dished out 95 assists and Whitney Miller had eight kills and 16 digs.

The Lakers face top-ranked Columbia Basin in their final pool match this morning before starting bracket play.
