North Bend, Coos Bay galleries partner for Artwalk

Artwalk!, a self-directed tour of art displays and culture in historic North Bend and Coos Bay, is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday. Visitors can start at any of the locations listed below and all locations will provide maps. For more information, those interested can contact Beccy Kaneen at Crystal Dolphin Gallery at 756-1989.

Coos Bay

• Black Market Gourmet: 495 Central Ave., is featuring Spence Billington, Jardin Kazaar, Pat Schneider and Tony Adams.

• Blackwell’s & Co Hair Design: 153 N. Broadway Ave., is featuring the art of Carol Young.

• Coos Art Museum will be featuring new art from the museum’s permanent collection. The 2007 By Land and By Sea exhibit will open Oct. 12 and run through Dec. 1.

• The Pottery Company: 145 Anderson Ave., will have Jan Tucker demonstrating the building of art objects with clay. Refreshments will be available.

• Prudential Seaboard Properties: 1544 Newmark Ave., will feature artwork by Adria Trail.

North Bend

• Pneuma Studios: 1988 Sherman Ave., will feature the photography of Coos County resident Hollie Ash. She uses a 35-mm camera for her landscape, historical architecture and nature photographs. Pneuma Studios also does custom framing, stained glass, beadwork and leather arts. Refreshments will be available.

• Fiction 101: 1980 Sherman Ave.,  will feature “Portrait of the Artist” — self-portrait paintings and sculpture — of local area artists. They will be showing through the month of December.

• Coos Head Food Store: 1960 Sherman Ave., will feature information about flax. Free samples of flax oil will be available. Participants also will be able to learn about using the seed and oil for good health and recipes as well as sampling new beers. Special guests from Headles and Treadles will demonstrate how to spin flax. The Food Store offers a selection of organic foods and products for healthy living. Local and sustainable products are offered when possible.

• Crystal Dolphin Gallery: 1901 Sherman Ave., will feature the works of artist of the month Laurie Lee. She creates Raku freeform pottery, which is waterproof.  Her latest series is freeform masks. Also available will be “Stuff Your Own Mushrooms” with a new variety of stuffings.

• North Bend Public Library: 1800 Sherman Ave., is featuring Mary Goodrich’s watercolor paintings of country scenes of people, landscapes, and buildings. Goodrich’s show will run during regular hours at the library through Oct. 31. This exhibit features new works and subjects, including lighthouses. Goodrich excels in the use of color to bring alive countryside and farm scenes.

• The Framery: 1774 Union Ave., will show “The Magic of Framing,” a unique way to see art framed before the work is complete.

• Gallery 280: 1743 Sherman Ave., will feature the work of glass artists Linda Morse and John Thorp. 

• Gallery by the Bay: 2100 Union Ave., has designed and put together a show from private collections that include South Coast artists as well as international pieces from Egypt, Iraq, China and Mexico. October artist Janine Mauchley also will be showing her works.

• Oregon Coast School of Music: 2055 Union Ave., will display photographs by Carol Young, as well as oils and sculpture by Susan Cameron from Laguna Woods, Calif., and the art of Leonard Bloom.  There also will be student music and refreshments.

• Sozo Tea and Coffee: 1955 Union Ave., under new ownership Sozo Tea and Coffee features local art walk on their walls and will offer free lattés during Artwalk.  

• Easy Lane Frames & Select Art Gallery: 3440 Broadway Ave., will feature the work of a local artisan family, the Stenders. Duffy Stender will be showing stone carvings and discuss his woodblock prints, prismacolor paintings and pine needle baskets. Veneita Stender plans to present her new collection of colored stone and textured metal jewelry. Greg Stender will show his Wild Birds in Wood series of hand-carved and painted birds depicting species found in Oregon coastal marshes and other areas of the state. Complementing the selection will be his prints of waterfowl and sporting scenes from pencil drawings. The gallery represents more than 45 local artists. Refreshments will be served.

Pony Village Mall on Virginia Avenue

• The Artist Loft Gallery: east wing, will feature Sharon Backues with “Family Valuables” watercolor portraits. The guest artist is Carol Turner presenting “Nature’s Themes.” There will be a reception and refreshments will be provided.

• Collette’s Crepes: east wing, will feature art by Curt Hitch.

• East Wing Art Wall: east wing entrance, is showing the work of Carolyn LeGrand and her students from Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon in various media.

• Heritage Textile Arts Guild: suite 131, is a working studio, featuring handcrafted fiber art items. They will feature hand-woven yarns and invite visitors to join the “knit-in.” They will give assistance in beginning a scarf or hat or visitors can visit as others knit. Refreshments will be served. They also will have spinners at the Coos Head Food Store demonstrating how to spin flax.

• The Rose Palette Art Studio & Gallery: space 128, has expanded into a new location on the lower level of the mall. The gallery will feature stained glass works by Sharon Jones, who is fairly new to the area. Also featured will be jewelry by Linda Morris, ceramics by Sue Scott, pen-and-ink art by Bill Melton and oils and acrylics by Ermie Goodrich.
