Marshfield lost a heart-breaker to No. 5 Ashland on Friday, falling 13-12 on the Grizzlies’ home field.

The difference in the game turned out to be one extra point, while Ashland’s Lewis Sebrell converted after the Grizzlies’ first touchdown.

Marshfield missed extra points on both its scores and also had a field goal blocked after a bad snap early in the fourth quarter.

The Pirates fell to 2-3 heading into the team’s Midwestern League opener at home against Churchill next Friday.

Marshfield scored on its first offensive play — a 75-yard pass from Brogan Oswald to Alexz Elletson.

Ashland responded when quarterback Matt Dierks connected with Josh Hogeland on a 61-yard pass to set up a 4-yard scoring pass between the same two players.

Marshfield pulled ahead again in the third quarter, when Oswald hit Jordan Shepherd with a 13-yard scoring strike on a fourth-down play.

Marshfield had a 199-66 advantage in rushing yardage, led by Cameron Winfrey’s 97 yards. Oswald completed 7 of 18 passes for 105 yards, with one interception, while Dierks went 8-for-13 for 184 yards, also with one interception — by Levi Meline.

Vikings win big

Cruisers crush Prospect

Powers improved to 2-1 in league play by pounding visiting Prospect 74-14 Friday in the Cruisers’ home opener.

Jake Stevens rushed for 275 yards and scored four touchdowns, while Thomas Wagner added three scoring runs for the Cruisers.

Meanwhile, Powers limited Prospect to single touchdowns in the first and third quarters.

“Our defense played better than it has, but we still need to work on open-field tackling,” said Powers coach Guy Shorb. “The offense executed better.”

Kyle Blanton scored on an interception and a pass from Stevens.

Freshman George Lewis had the other touchdown on a 21-yard run.

Shorb was pleased with his team’s play, especially since several players have missed practices due to injury and illness.

“The game was the most we’ve seen of any action since the last game,” he said.

The Cruisers now have a chance to position themselves well in the playoff chase with games the next two weeks against first-year program Triad and Elkton.

“We’re on the winning track,” Shorb said.
