Less than two weeks after the Choshi Bridge in Mingus Park was rededicated in the presence of representatives from Coos Bay’s sister city in Japan, several of its decorative cables were snipped earlier this week. According to Coos Bay Police Officer Michael Shaffer, at about 10:16 a.m. Wednesday, officers were dispatched to the bridge, where they took pictures of the four stainless steel cables that were cut on the south side of the structure.

Coos Bay Operations Administrator Steve Doty said there were no plans to restrict use of the bridge.

“We just hope people in the area will keep an eye on it,” he said.

The Choshi Bridge was built in 1988, but after several years, its wood began to rot and the City Council decided to replace it with a steel structure. The city agreed to a contract with Oregon Wood Inc., of Eugene, to put in a new structure in May 2006 for about $150,000.

A cost estimate of the damage was not readily available, though  Doty said it could be a couple thousand dollars.

Doty said the company will come down to assess the damage and determine replacement costs. No timeline for repairs has been determined.

The Police Department does not have any suspects at this time.  Shaffer encourages anyone with information about the incident to call Coos Crime Stoppers at 267-6666.
