Panthers shut out Bandon

Gold Beach made an impressive showing in its Sunset Conference opener.
The host Panthers scored on offense, defense and special teams en route to shutting out Bandon 55-0.
Gold Beach’s Herbie Smith scored on touchdown runs of 50, 40 and 17 yards; quarterback Jeffrey Knox scrambled in from 36 and 75 yards out and Garett Wolford plowed in from the 2-yard line.
David Bonotto returned a punt and a field goal for touchdowns, and the Gold Beach defense got a safety from Mitch Longwill for the game’s opening score.
Todd Martin converted five of his eight extra point attempts.
“We had fun tonight,” Gold Beach coach Kevin Swift said. “We ran everything but our normal offense and did well with it.”
Bobcats win on road
Myrtle Point shut out host Rogue River, limiting the Chieftains to 128 yards of total offense to improve to 3-0 in the preseason.
“The defense played great,” said Myrtle Point coach Brad Henshaw. “We just fly around very well and we prevented them from getting the big plays on us. That’s what it came down to.”
The Bobcats played much of the game without starting quarterback Ryan Hamilton, who left with a sprained wrist on his non-throwing hand. Backup Scott Clark connected with Tyler Love on a 79-yard scoring pass in the third quarter and Daven Cagley added a 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth.
The Bobcats forced two turnovers — a fumble recovery by Casey Cagley and an interception by Love — while winning their third game against Class 4A foes.
“Three-and-oh is where we wanted to be,” said Henshaw. “I’d like to be more consistent offensively, but I think everybody feels that way.”
The Bobcats play their Sunset Conference opener at Bandon this Friday.
Challengers dominate
Cascade Christian ran up 45 first-half points against host Glide and limited the Wildcats to just 38 yards in the game in a 45-6 win in the Challengers’ first Sunset Conference game.
Quarterback Alex Cummings scored two of the Challengers’ six touchdowns and had 84 of Cascade Christian’s 358 rushing yards.
Kyle Fields scored the touchdown for Glide.
Nonleague
North Bend wins
North Bend shut out Phoenix in the second half to beat the host Pirates 40-16 and improve to 2-2 in the preseason.
“We got a good win in the end,” said North Bend coach Bill Masei. “We didn’t play very well for the first half. We made some mistakes. We got here a little lackluster and tired from a long road trip. It took us a half to put it together and get it going and then we played a good half of football.”
Kale Forrester had three scoring runs for the Bulldogs — all in the second half.
Ethan Ottemiller got the Bulldogs on the board with a 1-yard run, the first of three scores in the opening quarter. Ottemiller later hit Luke Clark with a 30-yard scoring pass and Clark returned a Phoenix kickoff 90 yards for another score as the Bulldogs built a 21-16 halftime edge.
Lane Seals led North Bend’s attack with 171 yards on 21 carries.
“Lane Seals had a great game,” Masei said. “He broke tackles. He jumped over people. He had a phenomenal game running the ball.”
Forrester added 79 yards on 17 carries and Shawn Mitchell rushed eight times for 67 yards.
Ottemiller completed 5 of 13 attempts for 69 yards, with one score and two interceptions.
HV shuts out Bruins
Hidden Valley limited Brookings-Harbor to eight first downs and 130 total yards while rolling to a 33-0 nonleague win at Grants Pass.
David Wardle had two touchdown passes to Saxon Gotfried and Dustin Fox had two scoring runs for the Mustangs.
Brookings-Harbor lost four fumbles in the game and threw an interception.
Knights top Sutherlin
North Valley got three touchdowns by Keith Suits and handed Sutherlin its third straight loss, beating the visiting Bulldogs 38-22.
Brian Cook had a touchdown pass and a touchdown run for Sutherlin.
Skyline League
Cruisers top Cowboys
Powers got its first win of the season, beating host North Lake 56-38 Friday.
Jake Stevens threw touchdown passes to Bob Smith, Thomas Wagner and George Lewis and also scored two rushing touchdowns as Powers improved to 1-1 in Skyline League play.
Wagner also had a touchdown run and Smith returned an interception for a score for the Cruisers.
Stevens threw for 229 yards and Mason Lieaullen rushed for 125 yards for the Cruisers.
Nick Reeve had three scores for North Lake.
“We played a better game than we have, but our defense still needs some work,” said Powers coach Guy Shorb.
