One of North Bend’s finest athletes is set to be inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame on Tuesday.

His name may be unfamiliar to today’s students, but he forever will be remembered in the record books and hearts of those who were lucky enough to witness his greatness.

Three-sport standout Jim Shanley graduated from North Bend High School in 1954.

Shanley was a member of the football, basketball and track teams. But his true calling was on the gridiron. In his second full year in the Bulldog backfield, Shanley rushed for 1,158 yards while reaching the end zone a record 24 times and leading the Bulldogs to an impressive 7-2 record. Shanley stood out again his senior season, passing the 1,000-yard mark yet again with a record average of over 10 yards per carry while adding another 15 touchdowns.

With those impressive statistics, Shanley was selected as an all-state player, played in the 1954 Shrine game, and received All-American recognition. He was a member of the first class for the North Bend Hall of Fame in 2000.

After graduating from North Bend, Shanley took his talents to Eugene, where he was a member of   the University of Oregon football team. During his career at Oregon, Shanley reached the top 10 in rushing, scoring, all-purpose running, and punt/kickoff return yard averages. Shanley achieved all of this while also playing defensive back. He was an All-Pacific Coast Conference player each of his three years as a starter for the Ducks.

During Shanley’s sophomore season, he was among the top 10 rushers in the nation, averaging more than seven yards per carry.

And as a senior Shanley, was the first University of Oregon player ever to be selected to play in the Senior Bowl.

Last weekend, Shanley and fellow teammates from the University of Oregon’s 1958 Rose Bowl team were honorary captains for Oregon’s game against Fresno State. Shanley scored the only touchdown for the Ducks in a 10-7 loss to Ohio State in the 1958 Rose Bowl.

After college, Shanley went on to play with the Green Bay Packers in 1958. It was a disastrous year for the Packers and Shanley decided not to return to the team for a second season. He left Green Bay and headed back to the West Coast, where he turned to coaching. After coaching high school football in Seattle, he moved on to Washington State University, where he was worked with the defensive backs under head coach Jim Sweeney.

Today, Shanley resides in Walla Walla and is a representative for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. But this week, he will be receiving another special honor from the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame. Shanley is one of eight athletes and coaches being inducted into the Hall of Fame on Tuesday evening.

“This encompasses a much greater area than the North Bend and University of Oregon (halls of fame),” said Shanley of being selected to the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame, which covers the entire state of Oregon.

When asked how it felt to be mentioned with other great local coaches and athletes like Steve Prefontaine, Mel Counts, and Pete Susick, Shanley replied, “It’s quite an honor. These guys are very important to sports in Oregon.”

The presentations will be made at the Multnomah Athletic Club in Portland. This year’s class also includes masters athlete Robert Hunt; Olympic track and field coach Lance Deal; handball champion Ryan Grossenbacher; legendary Dayton football coach Dewey Sullivan; longtime University of Portland player, coach and athletic director Joe Etzel; soccer standout Shannon MacMillan; and gymnast Mary Ayotte-Law. Tickets are still available for $80 per person, which includes a banquet and the induction ceremonies. Those interested can contact Mike Rose at (503)227-7466, ext. 811.
