South Umpqua handed North Bend its first-ever Far West League loss in volleyball Thursday in the league opener for both teams.

“That was awesome,” said South Umpqua coach Sarah Gray, still giddy long after the match ended.

The Lancers won 25-19, 25-18, 25-22, ending the Bulldogs’ 54-match league win streak.

“It’s a great win to start off with,” Gray said. “We’ve been preparing for them. We didn’t know what to expect. My team played well. We made very few mistakes.”

The Lancers were led by Taylor Whitmore, who had 13 kills and three digs.

“Taylor played the best game I’ve ever seen before,” Gray said. “She was on fire.”

For the Bulldogs, Alexandra Mateski had 11 kills and 13 digs, Katie Banta had 12 assists, and libero Kelly Coolen had 16 digs.

Gray, well aware that the Bulldogs graduated all but one player from last year’s state title roster, came away impressed with North Bend.

“They played well,” she said. “We went back and forth, lots of long rallies. It’s good for the girls.”

BOYS SOCCER

Far West League

Pacific beats Sutherlin

Pacific had a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes to beat host Sutherlin 2-1 to move into second place in the Far West League standings.

The Bulldogs scored first, when Jared Campbell knocked in a direct kick in the 46th minute.

Peter Wayrynen had both Pacific goals, in the 70th and 76th minutes.

South Umpqua tops Coquille

Kial Blankenship had three goals and added two assists as South Umpqua beat host Coquille 10-1. Luis Lopez had two goals and had three assists. Jacob Grady, Arynn Boyles, Charlie Shellard, Tim Wilson and Alex Hunt also scored for South Umpqua.

Coquille’s goal was scored by Tyler Pelc in the second half.

South Umpqua led 6-0 at halftime. The Lancers took 45 shots and Coquille goalie Jeff Veysey had 19 saves.

“You can’t win if you can’t play defense,” said Coquille coach Randy Lucas. “We had a good effort, but our defense didn’t get the job done.”

Class 2A-1A

Panthers lose opener

St. Mary’s beat host Gold Beach 8-1 in the Panthers’ league opener on Thursday.

Alex Spears scored the first and last goals for the Crusaders and A.J. Weap also scored twice for St. Mary’s. Keenan Grant had an assist and a goal. Lu Arneet had two assists.

GIRLS SOCCER

Far West League

Trojans edge Bulldogs

Douglas beat visiting North Bend 1-0 in a Far West League match at Winston on Thursday.

The Trojans scored the only goal when Dani Rocco kicked the ball out of North Bend goalie Megan Meador’s hands and into the net with seven minutes to go in the match.

Bulldog coach Rusty Artz said the goal shouldn’t have counted because Meador had control of the ball, but  officials ruled it was a legal goal.

North Bend also lost Taylor Cribbins to a concussion early in the match when a Douglas kick collided with her and she later had to be taken to the hospital. Cribbins was released Thursday evening and should be OK after taking at least a week off, Artz said.

The coach was pleased with his team’s effort, especially since he had to spend most of the first half tending to Cribbins.

“The girls played well for not being coached on the field,” he said.

Lancers top Devils

South Umpqua beat visiting Coquille 3-1, on the strength of two goals from Chelsea Duffy.

Duffy scored in the fourth minute and again in the 24th to break a 1-1 tie. Victoria Jackson assisted the second goal, while Hannah Moser had a goal and an assist for the Lancers.

Frauke Fuchs scored Coquille’s goal in the 18th minute. The Red Devils missed a golden opportunity at another goal when South Umpqua’s Shay Harvey blocked a penalty kick.

“We had multiple opportunities,” said Coquille coach Mark Usselman. “It was frustrating.”

“Our defense played well. We had a good game.”

Bruins win

Brookings-Harbor kept its record perfect in the Far West League with a 2-1 win over host Umpqua Valley Christian on Thursday at Roseburg.

The Monarchs scored their goal in the fifth minute, when Amy Schneider put the ball in the net after a corner kick.

Jessie Goergen tied the score in the 35th minute, on a breakaway with an assist by Molly Moncrief. Ashley Juarez had the winning score with an unassisted goal in the 75th minute for the Bruins.

“We had plenty of chances,” said Brookings-Harbor coach Paul Angove. “They were pretty good. It was an exciting game.”

Glide edges Sutherlin

Glide beat visiting Sutherlin 2-1 in a Far West League match on Thursday.

Sutherlin’s Breanna Garcia scored in the ninth minute and Glide tied the score in the 52nd minute when Katie Meyer scored with an assist by Jerusha Hawkins. The winning goal came in the 71st minute, when Hawkins scored.

The Wildcats also got a late save by sweeper Sara Smaha, who swept into the goal box and blocked a shot after goalie Kristen Nelson got hit in the face.

“It was pretty dramatic there,” said Glide coach Dana Croll.

Midwestern League

North Eugene shuts out Marshfield

Esty Geiger had three goals and two assists and Meghan Shull added two goals as visiting North Eugene beat Marshfield 9-0 Thursday.

Marshfield’s Chloe Eberlein had a goal, but it was called back when officials ruled the NorthEugene goalkeeper had the ball under control, Marshfield coach Kitty DeMoss said.

Marshfield also got to play a lot of the younger players from its junior varsity team, which was a plus, because the Pirates likely won’t be able to play a JV schedule due to a limited amount of players.

“They have just a tremendous amount of spirit,”DeMoss said. “The kids were not down after the game. They thought they played well, and I did, too.”
