The soccer teams from Clark Community College pulled off a sweep at Southwestern on Tuesday.

Clark’s men beat the Lakers 1-0, getting a goal by Marc Meland in the third minute and making it stand up the rest of the match.

Southwestern suffered its second straight home defeat. The Lakers fell 2-0 to Bellevue on Saturday.

In both matches, slow starts killed the Lakers. Bellevue scored both of its goals in the first 12 minutes.

“You can’t give up early goals to teams on your home field,” Lakers coach Ray Fabien said after that game. “That makes it really difficult for you.”

Southwestern dropped to 1-5-0 after Tuesday’s loss. Clark leads the NWAACC South Region with a 5-0-1 record.

The Laker women lost 3-0 on Tuesday.

Allison Kellmer, Brooke Koppi and Lindsay Steinmann had the goals for Clark, which remained unbeaten with the win.

Clark is 5-0-1, in second place in the South Division behind Clackamas (6-0-0). Southwestern dropped to 3-4-0 in league play heading into a match at Lane on Saturday. The Titans are 4-1-0 on the year.

The loss broke a three-game winning streak for Southwestern.

Volleyball defeats

Southwestern’s volleyball team started league play with a pair of tough losses to top teams on the road over the weekend.

Clackamas beat the Lakers 31-29, 30-27, 30-19 on Friday.

“We just needed to handle the ball better on our side,” Southwestern coach John Speasl said. “We had lots of opportunities. We scored lots of points on ourselves. It’s kind of unfortunate, because it was a winnable game for us.”

Kasey Orr had 11 kills in the match. Whitney Miller had four aces, Ashley Canup had 10 digs, Jessica Bond had nine digs and 10 assists, and Kimberly Hipple had 16 assists.

The Lakers fell to Mount Hood 30-21, 30-25, 30-15 on Saturday.

Speasl said the Lakers played much better in that match, but Mount Hood has an outstanding team.

The Lakers host Umpqua, a first-year program, on Saturday in their home opener. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m.
