Gold Beach freshman Sydney Snook beat the field despite missing a turn at the Bandon Invitational on Tuesday, while North Bend’s boys and girls turned in dominating performances.

Snook and several other girls missed a turn during the first mile after somebody inadvertently moved a directional cone on the course. Back on track, Snook finished the 5,000-meter race in 20 minutes and 49 seconds, beating North Bend’s Jessianne Heley by 11 seconds.

Bulldogs Rachel Scavera (21:03) and Katie Romanko (21:04) were fourth and fifth to lead North Bend to the title with 16 points. Erica Schultz was seventh and Amanda McMillan 12th for the Bulldogs.

Coquille’s Vanessa Ferrer was sixth, with teammate Emily Halsell ninth. Pacific’s Wren Carter finished eighth, Reedsport’s Liriel Wilmes was 10th, Bandon’s Rachel Ledig was 11th and Myrtle Point’s Hailie Huffman was 13th.

Bandon finished second behind the Bulldogs with 59 points.

North Bend’s boys put up another strong effort.

Spenser Lynass won the race to remain unbeaten in his senior season, finishing in 16:03. Trevor Berrian was second in 16:31, with Sam Lynass fourth (17:25), Dan Flora fifth (17:42) and Zach Reichenberger seventh (18:13).

Steven Garboden rested his legs after running hard in the Prefontaine Memorial Run on Saturday, where he finished seventh overall.

Brookings-Harbor broke up North Bend’s potential for a perfect score in the meet. Steven Sanders finished third for the Bruins (17:01) and Alec Rosenthal was sixth (18:06).

North Bend finished with 19 points, while the Bruins had 44.

Among other top finishers, Gold Beach’s Miles Bernadett-Peterse was eighth, Bandon’s Blake Larkin was 12th and Coquille’s Levi Dieu was 13th.

GIRLS SOCCER

Midwestern League

Pirates lose opener

Marshfield scored the first goal, but Springfield had the rest as the Millers beat the visiting Pirates 7-1 in the Midwestern League opener for both schools.

Hannah Kemp scored for the Pirates in the fourth minute, knocking in a loose ball in front of the goal.

“It felt so good to be the first one out of the gate this time,” said Marshfield coach Kitty DeMoss.

Michelle Stone had two goals in each half for Springfield and Taryn Urmson added two more.

“I think we played pretty well,” DeMoss said. “We just have to put two halves together.”

Marshfield put freshman Patricia Beers at goalkeeper for the first time in the second half.

“With her in goal, we were able to put Kelsey Laird back in the field, so we had a lot of shots in the second half,” DeMoss said.

The Pirates host North Eugene at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Far West League

Lancers edge Bulldogs

South Umpqua beat host North Bend 2-1 on Tuesday in the Bulldogs’ best match of the season.

“The girls really put it together,” North Bend coach Rusty Artz said.

The Lancers scored in the 35th minute and then six minutes into the second half.

North Bend’s Jaycee Richey scored on a 30-yard shot that bounced in front of South Umpqua’s goal and over the goalkeeper in the 73rd minute.

The Bulldogs had other offensive attacks that missed.

“We had quite a few shots on goal tonight, which was really nice,” Artz said.

The Bulldogs also got a good night from goalie Megan Meador, Artz said.

“Megan Meador had I don’t know how many saves, but she was on fire in the goal,” he said.

Bruins beat Glide

Brookings-Harbor won 2-0 over visiting Glide on Tuesday.

Ally Manley scored for the Bruins in the 50th minute and Ashley Juarez scored in the 71st with an assist by Jessie Goergen.

“We played real well,” said Brookings-Harbor coach Paul Angove. “It’s so windy down here that it’s tough to play good soccer. I was real happy that we did allow many shots on goal.”

Monarchs tie Devils

Katlyn Shaw scored three goals in a three-minute spurt in the first half, but Umpqua Valley Christian rallied to tie the host Red Devils 3-3 on Tuesday.

Shaw had two goals in the 27th minute and another in the 29th to give the Red Devils a 3-1 halftime lead after Umpqua Valley scored on an early own-goal by the Red Devils.

But UVC scored in the 57th and 70th minutes to tie the score and the Red Devils couldn’t take advantage of multiple chances.

“We had all kinds of opportunities to score today,” said Coquille coach Mark Usselman. “We just couldn’t put the ball in the net. It wasn’t just one or two people, either. We were there with three or four people.”

Lea Price had a team-high six shots in the match, and Shaw had her three goals.

One bright spot was the play of the team’s four exchange students.

Frauke Fuche had four shots and Iris Kuit had three. Miri Erdlenbruch was solid on defense and Malin Fluske helped the offense, Usselman said.

Sutherlin tops Douglas

Sutherlin beat visiting Douglas 2-0 Tuesday.

Sierra Terrel-Perez had an unassisted goal in the 33rd minute. Brooke Hopkins added a goal in the 63rd minute for the Bulldogs.

BOYS SOCCER

Far West League

Pirates top Bruins

Pacific shut out visiting Brookings-Harbor 2-0 in a Far West League match on Tuesday, handing the Bruins their first league loss.

“We had a great game,” said Pacific coach Tom Swenson. “Brookings had a really pretty style of ball and Pacific did a nice job with the ball, so it was really an enjoyable one to watch.”

John Swenson scored both goals.

In the 22nd minute, he received a throw-in, took the ball across the top of the Bruins’ penalty box, had a nice opening and put it into the lower right corner of the net.

In the 65th minute, Swenson had a direct kick from 35 yards and bent it into the upper right corner of the net.

“Brookings had their chances, but they couldn’t quite get one in,” Tom Swenson said. “My back four were playing real well tonight.”

In addition, Pacific goalie Julian Carter had another solid game.

“Julian has really improved his game,” Swenson said. “He’s pretty athletic, too.”
