Car runs over fallen bicyclist on highway

Wednesday, September 19, 2007 |
A pedestrian received minor injuries after being run over by a car on Cape Arago Highway near Wallace Road on Tuesday night. According to the Oregon State Police log, at about 7:10 p.m., James P. Otis, 45, of Coos Bay was walking eastbound and attempted to mount his bicycle while in the bike lane near the highway intersection of Wallace Road. Otis fell into the roadway and was subsequently run over by a passing gray 1995 Nissan driven by Christine M. Howard, 82, also of Coos Bay. OSP said troopers determined that Howard was unable to avoid striking Otis and did not issue her a citation. Otis was transported to Bay Area Hospital for the treatment of minor injuries and released against the advice of medical personnel.
