The men’s and women’s soccer teams from Southwestern Oregon Community College have used a homestand this week to jump start their seasons.

The women recorded back-to-back shutouts Tuesday and Wednesday, while the men got their first win Wednesday after opening with three defeats.

Kate Tuers recorded both shutouts for the women as the Lakers beat Yakima Valley 2-0 on Tuesday and Olympic by a 1-0 score Wednesday.

Annie Haaglund had a goal in the 27th minute Tuesday and Megan Franko added an insurance goal in the 90th minute. Sarah Droege and Parker Sublette had the assists.

On Wednesday, Droege scored the only goal in the 79th minute, with an assist from Rebecca Fanter.

Over the weekend, the Lakers dropped a 2-0 game at Tacoma and a 4-1 game at Highline. Traci Kelley scored the team’s lone goal during the road swing in Washington.

Southwestern, now 2-3 on the season, hosts Bellevue today, the team’s fifth match in seven days.

The Laker men broke through with their 3-1 win against Olympic on Tuesday.

The Rangers got a goal in the third minute by Nick Ruckman, but Scott Johnson evened the score for Southwestern by converting a penalty kick in the 35th minute.

Dominique Agnimel scored twice in the second half for the Lakers, one with an assist by Juan Guitron.

“The kids played a very good game,” Southwestern coach Ray Fabien said. “We communicated really well. It was one of the better games we played (for)90 minutes.

“Hopefully, this will help us and give us the boost we need. Things are looking up.”

Fabien had predicted the Lakers needed just one win to get going after the team dropped a tough 1-0 loss to Peninsula on Tuesday.

The Pirates got the only goal by Hugo Vasquez in the 89th minute.

“We played a really good game,” Fabien said after the defeat. “It was a very tough loss for us, but hopefully we will remember the things that we did well and the one thing that we didn’t do well, hopefully we can correct it.”

During their Washington swing, the Lakers lost 3-0 to Highline and 2-1 to Tacoma. In that match, Guitron scored in the first three minutes, but Tacoma got a pair of goals in the second half to come back for the win.

Southwestern, now 1-3, hosts Bellevue on Saturday and Clark in a doubleheader with the women’s team next Tuesday.
