Pacific, Powers have new coaches

Beth Rector jumped at a chance to come home.
The new Powers volleyball coach was busy waiting tables in Portland when she had a chance to apply for the Powers position after coach Megan Shirley moved to Cove.
“It’s a great opportunity to be able to come back to your hometown and coach where you played,” Rector said. “I grew up in Powers and loved the program here and had a great coach, myself. To be able to come back and coach for the Cruisers is exciting.”
Rector played under coach Kelly Allred at Powers, starring in both volleyball and basketball before graduating in 1998 and going off to Warner Pacific College.
Rector had been more a basketball standout at Powers, but after two years playing both sports at Warner Pacific, she opted to stick with volleyball for her final years in college.
Rector coached the junior varsity team at St. Paul for two years and the freshman squad at Lake Oswego. Working at Lake Oswego was a good experience, but it wasn’t Powers.
The Cruisers reached the Class 1A playoffs last fall and return several key players, including four juniors who were starters a year ago — Haley Patterson, a third-year starter at setter; middle blockers Nicole Bittner and Bilhe Marshall, also third-year starters; and outside hitter Kristin Clauson.
“This group of young ladies is packed with potential,” Rector said. “They are young, athletic and scrappy.
“We have a couple of great defensive passers. We have a talented setter who works hard day in and day out, and a couple of hitters who can swing hard.”
Powers isn’t the only Skyline League school on the South Coast with a new coach. Tiffany Freitag takes over at Pacific after being the head girls basketball coach and JV volleyball coach last year.
Freitag might not have much talent to work with, at least in a historical sense, but she loves the upswing in the program that has provided enough players for a JV and varsity squad.
“We are really building upon the program here at Pacific, and we’re excited about the number of girls playing this year,” Freitag said. “I look forward to seeing these girls develop a lot this year on the court, both individual and as a team. I have seen improvement already and we will continue to improve through the preseason and league. We definitely have the potential to be competitive this year.”
The Pirates return just one starter, Samantha McShary. Newcomers include senior Natalie Manning, the league’s basketball MVP, and several other players from that team that shared the Skyline League title.
League play already started for both the Cruisers and Pirates. Pacific visits Camas Valley and Powers is at Umpqua Valley Christian tonight.
