Scotty Brown Memorial Run — Today, starting at 9 a.m. in the parking lot behind North Bend High School. Event is a noncompetitive, casual 5.5-mile trail run on a new trail in memory of former South Coast Running Club member Scotty Brown. Runners are encouraged to wear older shoes because of possible muddy conditions/creek crossings. Visiting is required during the run and a social gathering will be held after the event.
Prefontaine Memorial Run — Saturday, Sept. 15, starting at 10 a.m. in downtown Coos Bay. Events include a 10-kilometer run and a 2-mile fun run/walk. The entry fee is $18 by Sept. 11 and $21 on race day and includes a race T-shirt. People also can register on-line at www.prefontainerun.com. Race-day registration will be held at St. Monica Catholic Church from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Packet pickup for preregistered runners will be available during those hours and from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sept. 14. This is the 28th edition of the largest annual sporting event in Coos Bay.
Million Dollar Challenge — Saturday, Oct. 13, starting at 10 a.m. at the Coos Bay Boardwalk. Events include a 5,000-meter run/walk and a 2,500-meter run for kids ages 13 and under. All runners will be judged against age-graded standards set by the Road Runners Club of America and the South Coast Running Club. All participants get an award. The entry fee is $6, $4 for students under 19, for those who sign up by Oct. and $8 for all participants on race day. Registration will be held in the glass structure near the north end of the boardwalk from 9 to 9:45 a.m. on race day. Entry forms are available on the South Coast Running Club’s Web page at www.southcoastrunningclub.com. See Jane Run — Saturday, Oct. 20, starting at 10 a.m. at John Topits Park in Coos Bay. This is a female-only event that benefits the Women’s Safety and Resource Center. Events include a 5-kilometer run/walk and a noncompetitive 1-mile walk. The entry fee is $15 with a T-shirt ($13 for students under 19) and $6 without for those who sign up by Oct. 5. The fee is $20 with a shirt or $8 without on race day.
