Community Sports, Fast Breaks for Sept. 8: Price, Boice team to win Popeye Race

Dean Price and Kathy Boice teamed to win the annual Popeye Race at the Popeye and Olive Oyl golf tournament at Cedar Bend Golf Course over the holiday weekend.
Price and Boice won the horserace for the top 15 teams after two days of qualifying. The teams were eliminated until only Price and Boice remained. They outlasted Dan York and Lee Cummings on the final hole.
Bill Nelson and Karen Anderson won the Wimpy Race, for the next 15 qualifiers. Bill Hansen and Jackie Letendre finished second.
The pairs were chosen through a random draw held the night before the tournament began.
Labor Day Tournament
Wes and Velda St. Clair of Springfield won the annual Labor Day Couples Tournament at Coos Country Club.
The Shadow Hills Country Club members shot a three-day total of 193 to take low-gross honors in the A Flight.
Marty Casillas and Rafael Herrira of Beau Pre, a club in Humboldt County, Calif., had low-net honors in the A Flight with a total of 174.
The golfers played scramble on the first day, best ball on the second and Chapman on the third.
Tom and Darlene Sinclair of the Coquille Valley Elks Lodge took low-gross honors in the B Flight, while Dave and Barb Sloan of Royal Oaks had low-net honors.
In the C Flight, Mike and Sheri Maguire of Coos Country Club took low-gross honors, while Jim and Peggy O’Rourke of Quail Valley earned low-net honors.
The annual tournament drew 50 couples.
Davis wins State Elks
Ronnie Davis beat Jason Snelgrove to win the State Elks match play championship Monday at the Coquille Valley Elks Lodge.
The championship match went 19 holes.
In the semifinals, Davis beat Tracy Couch and Snelgrove topped Bob Raden.
The tournament drew 80 golfers in 10 total flights.
The losers in the first round of the championship flight formed the first flight, where Justin Johnson beat Gene Arriola for the title. Johnson topped Pete Davis and Arriola beat Bob Bohner in the semifinals.
Other flight winners were Steve Major, Mike Tucker, Bill Looney, Don Bishop, Ken Noel, Bugs Bishop, Jack Hackett and Bob Stone.
The event also featured two holes-in-one.
Dick Moore aced the first hole on the opening day of the tournament, winning a $1,000 prize. Johnson recorded a hole-in-one on the ninth hole on Sunday.
Soccer Club to meet
The Bay Area Soccer Club will hold a meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 13, at the Holy Redeemer Parish Center.
Anyone interested in getting involved in the club or who wants to learn more about the organization is invited to attend.
Some officer positions also need to be filled.

Tennis clinics planned
Two week-long tennis clinics are planned for after school in North Bend, with the first one starting Monday.
The first clinic will run from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The second is Sept. 17-21, also from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Both will be on the North Bend High School tennis courts.
All players need sneakers, shorts and T-shirts. Rackets will be provided if needed and all participants will receive T-shirts.
The cost will be $25 for each week and people are welcome to participate in both weeks.
Instructors Sally Woodman, Kathy Cooley and Liz Stevens will work with the students on forehands, backhands, overheads, volleys, serving and scoring.
The money raised by the clinics will help the three coaches pay for a national tournament they have qualified for in October in Tucson, Ariz.

Coast to Coast Baseball will hold a tryout for players from all parts of Oregon in The Dalles on Saturday, Oct. 6, to pick teams for international competitions in Puerto Rico, Australia, Europe and Hawaii.
The tryout will be held at the Quinton Street Ballpark in The Dalles to pick players for teams in the 11-12, 13-15 and 16-18 age groups.
Over the past eight years, Coast to Coast has taken nearly 1,500 players from 46 states to compete around the world.
