Umpqua Valley Christian took a 2-1 win over host Coquille in a nonleague soccer match Thursday.

Despite the loss, the Red Devils were much improved over last year’s squad, coaches said.

“We had a great game,” said Mike Kelly, an assistant coach who led the team with Randy Lucas unavailable. “Our team kept the pace throughout the whole game, both on offense and defense.”

The teams were scoreless in the first half, but the Monarchs got on the board 2:40 into the second half, when Jacob Brint scored.

Michael Graham added another goal in the 64th minute for Umpqua Valley Christian.

Coquille scored in the final two minutes, when Jake Johnson looped the ball over UVC’s goalie.

For the match, UVC had 34 shots and Coquille goalkeeper Jeff Veysey, one of the team’s players from Myrtle Point, recorded 23 saves.

“Our goalie, Jeff Veysey, stepped up to the next level or two,” Kelly said.

Coquille had 24 shots in the match.

Pirates edge Eagles

Marshfield beat visiting Eagle Point 2-1 to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Eike Behrens scored on a rebound after a penalty kick by Richie Richmond in the second half to tie the score after Eagle Point scored in the first half.

Richmond scored the game winner off an assist by Tyler Graves late in the match to give the Pirates the victory.

“They played good,” said Marshfield coach Tony Preston. “They’re passing around good and really connecting the passes together. We still need to work on finishing — once we get it into our offensive third of the field, putting it in the net.”

North Bend, Elmira tie

Alex Clark of North Bend scored on a header in the 70th minute off an assist by Sean Jany to give North Bend a 2-2 tie with host Elmira in a nonleague match on Thursday.

Philip Henneman and Matt Boytz scored for Elmira to take a 2-1 lead.

Taylor Strand scored in the 11th minute for North Bend, bending a corner kick into the net.

“We’re getting a lot of effort,” said North Bend coach Blaine Deming. “A lot of guys are getting playing time.”

CROSS COUNTRY

Bulldogs open with win

North Bend’s boys followed up their state title with a dominant win against larger schools in the Thurston Invitational at Lane Community College on Thursday.

The Bulldogs placed all five scoring runners in the top 14 while competing against 11 Class 4A and Class 5A schools, finishing with 37 points. McKay was second with 59 points.

North Bend senior Spenser Lynass won the race with an impressive season-opening time of 16 minutes and 20 seconds on the 5,000-meter course. Marshfield’s Jared Bassett was second, 12 seconds back.

Bulldogs Trevor Berrian (16:58) and Steven Garboden (17:00) were fourth and fifth, respectively, with North Bend’s Sam Lynass 13th (18:11) and Dan Flora 14th (18:29).

Marshfield’s girls finished second to McKay by placing four runners in the top 10.

Jana Sadler was sixth in 22:09, with Tori Scott (22:34), Amber Reis (22:47) and Shelby Paulson (22:57) finishing eighth through 10th. Sarah Cooney was 25th in 24:18 to round out Marshfield’s scoring. McKay’s Janelle Everetts won the race in 20:43.

North Bend’s girls ran in the junior varsity race, dominating that event. Jesianne Heley was first in 12:37 for the 3,000-meter course, followed closely by Rachel Scavera (12:38) and Katie Romanko (12:39). Erika Schultz, Amanda McMillan, Kelli Kronsberg, Sara Doty and Tori Sevier all placed in the top 12.

North Bend hosts its own invitational on Tuesday at Tugman State Park in Lakeside.

Oakland Invitational

Reedsport placed four boys in the top 10 in the non-scoring Oakland Invitational on Thursday.

Tom McKay of Sutherlin won the boys race, covering the 3,000-meter course in 11:04. Reedsport’s Eli Garner was third in 11:48, while Duncan Law, Anthony Halstead and Justin Halstead finished sixth through eighth.

Chelsea Spencer of Sutherlin won the girls race in 12:32.

VOLLEYBALL

Indians beat Marshfield

Roseburg beat visiting Marshfield 13-25, 26-24, 25-16, 25-19 in a nonleague match on Thursday.

“We started strong,” said Marshfield coach Tammie Montiel. “We came out with lots of energy and were flying around and playing fairly mistake-free. The second, third and fourth game, we were right there all the time and kind of killed ourselves with unforced errors.

“It’s early in the season, but we need to work on not making those unforced errors anymore.”

Ali Worthen had 18 kills and three aces for the Pirates, while Melanie Stout added five kills and three blocks. Taylor Scott had five aces and eight digs, Nikki Gross had 16 assists and 12 digs, and Brittney Young had 11 digs.

The Pirates are back at Roseburg for the Roseburg Invitational on Saturday and host North Bend on Tuesday.

Bulldogs fall on road

Junction City beat visiting North Bend, 25-22, 25-21, 25-14 in a nonleague match on Thursday.

The Bulldogs were improved over losses to Marist and La Salle on Tuesday, coach Les Willett said.

“We played pretty well,” he said. “We still had our little glitches where we gave up four or five in the first and second game. We’re just young. (Junction City was) a pretty senior-laden team. I don’t feel we did that poorly.”

Alexandra Mateski had six kills and Jodi Smartt added four. Kelly Coolen and Kezzy Colberg played strong defense with 15 and 12 digs, respectively. Willett also said setter Katie Banta had a strong match.

“We’re going to get there,” he said.

North Bend is at the Roseburg Invitational on Saturday.

Marist stops Siuslaw

Marist beat Siuslaw 25-14, 25-18, 25-27, 25-20 in a nonleague match Thursday in Eugene.

Jessica Dodson led Siuslaw with 15 kills and Shelby McClellan added seven kills and a stuff block. Reyna Gutierrez had five aces.

Lancers top Red Devils

South Umpqua beat visiting Coquille 25-18, 25-10, 25-21 on Thursday.

Triana Crane and Amy Rauth each had nine kills for the Lancers. Taylor Whitmore added six kills and five aces.

Tigers beat Knights in five

Bandon beat visiting North Valley, 21-25, 25-23, 25-12, 19-25, 15-7 in a nonleague match to improve to 2-0 on the season.

The Tigers rallied from an eight-point deficit in the second game to spark the comeback.

“They didn’t give up,” coach Shani Pierce said. “I’m very proud of them for that.”

Briana Valentine had 16 kills, four digs and two aces for the Tigers. Maya Magallenes added 10 kills, five digs and four aces. Jordan Tipton had 22 assists and three aces.

Skyline League

Elks top Cruisers

Elkton beat host Powers 25-15, 25-17, 20-25, 25-19 in the Skyline League opener Thursday.

“The girls showed up to play,” said Powers coach Beth Rector. “They played hard. They played their hearts out. Unfortunately, they didn’t get a ‘W.’”

Nicole Bittner had nine kills and Bilhe Marshall added four kills for Powers.

Rector, in her first season as coach, said the team probably struggled some with first-match jitters against the traditionally powerful Elks.

“They’ve got a lot of potential,” she said. “I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”

Wolves top Pacific

Days Creek beat host Pacific, 25-9, 22-25, 25-11, 25-17 in the Skyline League opener for both teams Thursday.

“We were very competitive, probably more competitive than Pacific’s been in a few years,” said new Pacific coach Tiffany Freitag.

Ashley Curry and Eva Digby each had three kills for the Pirates. Cassie Keeler and Natalie Manning had two blocks each for the team. Digby had a strong defensive match for the Pirates, Freitag said.

“We’re still learning to play together,” Freitag said. “We have good potential.”
