Featuring a traditional salmon bake, canoe races and an award-winning lineup of Native American musicians, the fourth-annual Mill-Luck Salmon Celebration will be held this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, at The Mill Casino-Hotel, 3201 Tremont Ave., in North Bend.
Linked to a tradition marking the return of salmon upriver, the Mill-Luck Salmon Celebration began as a means of sharing the culture and traditions of the Coquille Indian Tribe and other Pacific Northwest tribes with residents and visitors to the South Coast. Now in its fourth year, the festival attracts Native American artisans throughout the West and Canada.
The event is known for the Coquille Tribe’s open pit method for cooking the traditional Salmon Bake dinner. The Mill-Luck Salmon Celebration is a fun-filled educational experience for the entire family, a press release said. Beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday visitors at The Mill Casino will see performances by dancers and drummers, as well as traditional games, activities for children, a number of unique cultural demonstrations and a marketplace offering traditional wares and food.
Bay front canoe races will begin at about 2 p.m. on Saturday, with several Oregon tribes competing in traditional canoes.
One of the highlights of the celebration will be two concerts featuring Native American Music award-winner Wade Fernandez, who will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, in the Salmon Room. Soaring from his Menominee Indian Reservation roots, Fernandez honors tradition while forging ahead in an ever-expanding world of music. With skills comparable to any world-class pow wow singer or hand-drum competitor, Fernandez artfully combines elements of blues, rock, world-beat, jazz, traditional singing and drumming.
Award-winning Native American music also will be showcased at Warehouse 101, with performers Jan Michael Looking Wolf and guests performing a tribute to the Native American flute from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. on Friday.
Tickets for the salmon bake dinner, served from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, and the concerts, are on sale at KoKwel Gifts, inside The Mill Casino.
Concert tickets cost $20 for the general public, and $15 for members of the casino’s players club, The Millionaire$ Club. Tickets for the salmon bake dinner, which include a commemorative T-shirt, are $20 for adults and $14 for children.
Complete packages including the T-shirt, tickets for both the salmon bake dinner and the concert cost $34 for adults, $28 for children and $29 for Millionaire$ Club members.
