A Coos Bay veterinarian is awaiting a hearing date to appeal an Oregon Veterinary Medical Examining Board decision to revoke his license earlier this summer.

Dr. William Powell, who operated the Low Cost Spay & Neuter Clinic in Empire, closed his practice on July 10, eight days after receiving a letter from the Examining Board, advising him it intended to revoke his veterinary license for presenting a serious danger to public health and safety and for performing “unacceptable patient care.”

Craig Spivey, a spokesman for the Oregon Office of Administrative Hearings, said the office recently received a request for a pre-conference hearing, in which all parties involved will sit in on a conference call to coordinate a date for a two-day hearing. He said he is not sure when the teleconference call or when the hearing is likely to be held. It will not be open to the public.

Powell, who hired Waldport attorney Scott Beckstead to represent him, said he doesn’t believe it is likely he will regain his license regardless of his efforts.

“If I can get the license I would reopen the clinic, but I don’t think that’s possible. That’s where we are at,” Powell said, adding he would not reopen if it takes him more than three years to regain his license.

of all the good things dr. powell has done for this community i cannot believe he cannot get his license back . if only the board would go in and sit through a day in his clinic they would see how great him and his staff are needed. i can't say how much i have missed him in the last few months. my dogs are my life and they are like family members and if i saw anything wrong with this clinic i wouldn't have brought my dogs there. now my dogs need dental cleaning and i don't know how i can afford any other place . dr powell has always put my dogs first and worked out the money matters later. it's too bad that other vets in town had to raise such a stink about dr powell just because they were losing money out of their pockets cause dr powell *is* so caring . dr powell and staff : you are missed and we really need you back .
