Regatta returns for 58th year at Lakeside

Today marks the start of festivities that will lead up to this weekend’s 58th running of the Coos Bay Yacht Club’s Labor Day Regatta in Lakeside.
This year, the club expects a turnout of about 45 boats, according to registration chairwoman Claudia Moore.
“That’s what we have registered so far, but people can sign up on the day of the race and we usually get a few,” Moore said. “Some people just decide late.”
In past years, Moore said, the field was much larger, but that the enthusiasm for the sport seems to go in waves.
“Sure, there used to be a bigger turnout, but I’m sure gas prices have had an effect,” Moore said. “But I expect it will pick up again soon. It always seems to fluctuate from year to year.”
Moore encourages people to come out and watch, even though visibility is sometimes limited.
“A great place to watch is from the clubhouse area itself,” Moore said. “Of course, even then, you really can’t see the entire course. There’s a lot of little finger inlets on the lake that hide the boats.”
Moore also suggested that people may want to bring out their own boats to view the race, but cautioned, “We only ask that you be careful not to make wakes or waves and that you stay off the course during the competition.”
Coos Bay Yacht Club Commodore Steve Kridelbaugh said the race is the highlight of the year for the club.
“Oh sure, it’s the big event for us and there’s a lot of effort that goes into it,” Kridelbaugh said.
“But we’ve been doing it for so many years that the only tough part is recruiting the people to work it. Other than that, the event practically runs itself.”
Five races will be held, beginning at noon on Saturday and continuing through Sunday, with the final two races.
This will be followed by the junior competition.
The boat classes will include Geary 18, San Juan 21, Laser and MC scow.
The race will include locals and club members, according to Moore, with a few visitors.
“We have a boat coming in from Nevada and even one from Canada,” Moore said. “This should be a great event, if the weather permits.”
According to Kridelbaugh, Mother Nature will cooperate.
“I just checked the weather for the weekend and it will be sunny with winds around 15 mph,”he said. “Perfect.”
