Carl Nelson, of Coos Bay, will be celebrating his 90th birthday with family and friends from 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Eagles Lodge.

As Carl was a cowboy for many years, his family encourages guests to dress in western style. Prizes will be awarded for the best dressed cowboy and cowgirl. The band Stampede also will perform at the event.

Carl was born Sept. 7, 1917, in Sweetwater, Texas. On Feb. 18, 1939, he married Maggie Lou Grissom. They were married for 66 years before her death on March 31, 2005. They had four children, Mary Lou, Jean, Carl Dean and Grady Ray, who was killed in Vietnam in 1968.
