On Aug. 2, the Coos Bay Planning Commission approved a conditional use permit for mineral sands mining on forest lands between Bandon and Charleston.

The 15-day appeal period ends Friday at 5 p.m., but as of Tuesday, no one had come forward to pay the $2,100 fee to appeal the planning commission’s decision.

The mining operation, to be conducted by Portland-based Oregon Resources Corp., will have trucks coming into or leaving its premises 24-hours-a-day seven-days-a-week at both the refinery site in Bunker Hill and at the mining sites, located on property leased from the Weyerhaeuser Company, stretching south from Seven Devils Road near Charleston.

Residents were given 15 days from the date notification of the planning commission’s approval was mailed, Aug. 9.
