Nick Sherwood of Albany put together two outstanding rounds to sweep the South Coast stops on the Umpqua Dairy Juniors golf tournament circuit this week.
Sherwood, a student at West Albany High School, shot even par 72 at Forest Hills Country Club in Reedsport on Wednesday and a 2-under 70 at Coos Country Club on Thursday to win the 16- and 17-year-old age group in the tournament.
Marshfield golfer Zan Walker was second at Reedsport and tied for second with three others at Coos Country Club.
Sherwood was one of four golfers to sweep the two tournaments, which are part of the Oregon Golf Association’s junior schedule.
Andy Amstrong, the son of former North Bend golf coach Rich Armstrong and volleyball coach Susi Armstrong, won the pee wee boys 8-11 age group with nine-hole scores of 42 at both Forest Hills and Coos Country Club.
Aubrie Street won the intermediate girls (12-14) division with scores of 89 at Forest Hills and 89 at Coos Country Club. Monica Vaughn of Reedsport was second at both tournaments.
Sumlan Raza won the intermediate boys (12-13) division at Forest Hills with a score of 77 and tied Conner Kumpula for first at Coos Country Club with a 74. Montana Frame of Reedsport was second at Forest Hills.
Other winners at Coos Country Club were Andy Rodby in the boys 14-15 division with a 73, Danna Olson in the girls 15-17 age group with a 78, and Gigi Stoll in the 8-11 division with a 40.
Other winners at Forest Hills were Harry Chang in the boys 14-15 age group with a 74, Michelle Chu in the girls 15-17 age group with a 78 and Haleigh Krause in the girls 8-11 division with a 47.
The tournout at both courses was the best in the past few years, with 58 golfers playing at Forest Hills and 52 at Coos Country Club.
Forest Hills pro Kevin Wheeler also said the scores were the best in his nine years in Reedsport, which was an accomplishment.
“The golf course was not that easy,” he said.
