The Three Rivers Sandblasters reached the final four at the American Legion State Tournament on Friday, eliminating tournament host Doc Stewarts with a 12-3 win at Roseburg.
“We played very well,” said Three Rivers coach Corky Franklin. “We played one of our best games of the year. We were good in all facets of the game.”
Three Rivers still needs three more wins over the next two days to earn the state title and a berth in the regional tournament, starting with a 7 p.m. game today against Medford, the only team in the tournament still undefeated.
Medford scored a run in the ninth to edge Southridge 7-6 in the late game Friday night.
For the Sandblasters, Friday’s second consecutive elimination-game victory keeps the team’s hopes alive in its first-ever trip to state.
Chase Meister pitched a complete game for the Sandblasters, scattering nine hits.
“Chase had an outstanding game and we were outstanding on defense,” Franklin said, adding that center fielder David Deutschman, left fielder Travis Anderson and first baseman Eddie Crowe each had “amazing catches.”
Three Rivers backed Meister up with two big innings after Doc Stewarts took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth. The Sandblasters had five runs in the bottom of the fourth and seven more in the sixth to secure the win.
Crowe and Deutschman each had doubles and catcher Zach Laxague had three hits and drove in two runs.
“We just outplayed them in every aspect of the game,” Franklin said.
In the early game Friday, Clackamas, which handed Three Rivers a loss in the opening round of the tournament, was elminated 7-6 by Columbia Gorge, a team from The Dalles.
Columbia Gorge plays Southridge in the early game today, at 3 p.m.
