Waterfront drops into tie for first

North Coos put pressure on itself to succeed in the regular-season finale tonight at home against Sheldon by getting swept for the second time this summer by Roseburg Horizon.
The losses at Roseburg on Wednesday left the Waterfront with the same record as Roseburg Pepsi - 12-6 - with just tonight's games remaining. While North Coos hosts Sheldon, Roseburg Pepsi visits South Eugene.
If the teams finish the season tied, North Coos holds the tiebreaker edge for the top seed into the playoffs, by virtue of winning three of the four games against Pepsi this year.
North Coos missed great opportunities in both games Wednesday.
Roseburg led 3-2 entering the seventh inning of the opener, but Adam Opoien led off with a single for North Coos and Tyler Lancaster added a bunt single. Gatlon Giorgis singled to drive in Opoien and Lancaster scored on a grounder by Neal Vaught.
The normally reliable Vaught retired Roseburg's first two batters in the bottom of the seventh, but Mitch Huff and Cameron Newell had back-to-back singles. Vaught then struck out Jordan Radford for what should have been the final out, but the pitch was dropped and the throw to first base resulted in an error that scored Huff with the tying run.
In the bottom of the eighth, Bryson Norton walked and scored the winning run on a two-out single by Gabe Liebowitz.
Lancaster had two hits and two runs for North Coos and Opoien and Bryce Weidman each also had two hits. Vaught drove in two runs and scored another.
North Coos took a 5-3 lead in the nightcap when Giorgis, Weidman and Bruce Ohlrich had consecutive singles in the fifth inning. Ohlrich drove in Giorgis and Weidman scored on a wild pitch.
Roseburg got single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game and won it in the seventh when Newell walked, moved up on a grounder and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Ohlrich had three hits, a run and two RBIs for the Waterfront. Opoien and Lancaster had two hits each.
