Sports Briefs: LB Briggs back with Bears
Thursday, July 26, 2007 1:48 PM PDT

CHICAGO - Pro Bowl linebacker Lance Briggs, who'd threatened to sit out the season, agreed to a one-year, $7.2 million deal with the Chicago Bears as the team's franchise player.

Briggs, who helped the Bears make the Super Bowl last season for the first time since 1985, had been unhappy when Chicago designated him as its franchise player. It meant he would get the average of the top five salaries at his position but restricted his ability to explore free agency because the Bears could match any offer.

Holmes reporting to camp

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City Chiefs running back Priest Holmes has informed the team that he intends to report to training camp Saturday.

Holmes told Chiefs president Carl Peterson on Wednesday that he wants to play for the Chiefs in 2007, team spokesman Brad Kuhbander said. Holmes is under contract with the Chiefs through 2009.

Peterson said the 33-year-old Holmes might be placed on the physically unable to perform list initially to gauge his conditioning and to see how he feels after noncontact drills.

He has not played since Oct. 30, 2005, when he was injured by a hit by linebacker Shawne Merriman in a game at San Diego. The hit left him with head and neck trauma, diagnosed by three spinal specialists.

The 5-foot-9, 213-pound Holmes spent 2006 on the physically unable to perform list. Since joining the Chiefs in 2001, Holmes ranks first in the NFL in averaging 97.3 yards per game and 136 yards from scrimmage.

Seahawks' top pick still not signed

KIRKLAND, Wash. - Josh Wilson is fast - but apparently not at everything.

The Seahawks' top choice in April's draft still had not signed a contract Wednesday, leaving his agent merely “hoping” to avoid the speedy cornerback and kick returner being late for his first NFL training camp. Seattle's rookies are due to report today.

The Seahawks expect Wilson, a 5-foot-9 cornerback with a 40-yard dash time in the low 4.3-second range, to report on time as their last rookie signed. He would follow third-round pick Brandon Mebane, a defensive tackle, and fourth-round pick Baraka Atkins, a defensive end, as the last ones to reach deals this week.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Titans agreed to terms with veteran receiver Eric Moulds, adding some needed experience to the roster for quarterback Vince Young.

Padres deal Linebrink to Brewers for three minor leaguers

CINCINNATI - In turnabout in trade philosophy, the Milwaukee Brewers acquired reliever Scott Linebrink from the San Diego Padres for three minor league pitchers on Wednesday, hoping to bolster their unexpected run at the playoffs.

Linebrink will be a setup man for closer Francisco Cordero, who has converted 32 of 35 save chances.

“I wasn't surprised. I knew I was getting close to the deadline and hadn't heard anything,” Linebrink said. “It's usually when you don't hear anything that happens. Last year my name was thrown out plenty and nothing happened. When it goes quiet there is usually something in the works.”

The Padres acquired right-hander Will Inman, a third-round pick in the 2005 amateur draft; left-hander Steve Garrison, a 10th-round pick in the same draft; and 25-year-old left-hander Joe Thatcher.

The bullpen is one of the Brewers' main concerns, in part because of injuries. Reliever Yovani Gallardo had to move into the starting rotation after Ben Sheets hurt a finger on his pitching hand earlier this month.

The Brewers have been in first place in the NL Central since a 25-11 start. Their 81/2-game lead had dwindled to only three in the past week, a slide set up by the team's struggling offense.

Staal brothers arrested

MINNEAPOLIS - Carolina Hurricanes star Eric Staal and his brother, Jordan Staal of the Pittsburgh Penguins, were arrested for misdemeanor disorderly conduct and obstructing the legal process at Eric Staal's bachelor party at a Minnesota resort.

The Cook County Sheriff's Office said the brothers were among 14 arrested last weekend after authorities received several complaints about “screaming, yelling and playing loud music” at the resort in northeastern Minnesota, about two hours from the Staals' hometown of Thunder Bay, Ontario.
