Today at the fair

The Shwing Daddies presented by Kitchen Draft will be performing on the main stage along with Teen Idol, presented by K-DOCK radio.

Friday at the fair

Friday the fair is sponsored by Hometown Hardware.

The Northwest Pro Rodeo Association rodeo, sponsored by Verger Dodge, will begin at 6:30 p.m. This year is touted to be more exciting than ever with the competition of the bounty bull in place.

An after-rodeo dance will feature music by the Nicole Navarro Band.

Saturday at the fair

Saturday is the last chance for the NPRA rodeo sponsored by Verger Dodge. The after-rodeo dance will feature music by the Dan Daniella Band sponsored by Sause Bros. Ocean Towing.

Also Saturday will be the finals of the Colgate Country Showdown presented by Bi-Coastal Media.

Throughout the fair

The OSU Extension Family Food Educators (formerly the Masters Food Preservers) will be on hand at the 2007 Coos County Fair to answer questions about food preservation.

Trained volunteers will be available from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to address concerns about preserving food safely and all aspects of home canning as well. Several areas covered in food preservation include pickling, drying, smoking, freezing and the “how-to” of fresh jams, jellies, preserves and pie fillings.

There will be Home Extension brochures for sale for a small fee, and information and sign-up sheets for classes and instruction. Instant and regular Clear-Jel will again be available for sale. Clear-Jel is the commercial trade name for a modified food starch that is resistant to breakdown at high temperatures, making it an excellent thickener for cooking and canning.

There also will be a raffle basket filled with kitchen tools and treats. The winning ticket will be drawn on the last day of the fair and the winner notified by phone.

Bus Shuttle

Laidlaw will be providing a shuttle service to the Coos County Fair on Friday and Saturday.

The shuttle will pick up at Pony Village Mall and Wal-Mart. The first pickups will be at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. The final return to Coos Bay will be approximately 11:30 p.m.

Bus fare is $2 round trip.

Contest under way

The Coos County Fairgrounds Museum is featuring the history of the drill this year.

Hometown Hardware will have an entry box at it store, located at 323 Spruce St. in downtown Myrtle Point. The store is giving away a WORX Hammer Drill, 6.5 amp, keyless chuck, auxiliary handle, no load speed of 0-3000 rpm. The drawing will be held Thursday. Information is posted in the museum at the Fair.

Birthing center

The fairgrounds will have an animal birthing center open all day at the fair.

Presentations by the 4-H and local vets will happen daily and there will be a contest ongoing for the birthday of one of the animals.

Dog agility

Lighthouse Action Dogs Agility Group will hold demonstrations at the Coos County Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, in front of the 4-H Horse Barns.

Fair spectators are encouraged to watch and cheer on these canine athletes as they leap over jumps, weave through poles and zip through tunnels. Many of the dogs have competed on the local and regional levels. Mick, and Australian shepherd owned by Liz Dodge, competes locally, regionally and has been in the USDAA World Games the last two years.

Western Express railroad

The Western Express Railroad, sponsored by Coos Bay Toyota, will run the perimeter of the lower fairgrounds and take patrons from the parking lots to the entry gate.

The Western Express Railroad is capable of hauling 36 adults at one time. More information can be obtained at www.westernexpressrailroad.com.
