PORTLAND - Michelle Wie accepted a sponsor's exemption Tuesday to play in the Safeway Classic next month.
The 17-year-old Wie is continuing her course of playing as many times as the LPGA allows: eight. The Safeway Classic on Aug. 24-26 would be her seventh event, with her final tournament expected to be the Samsung World Championship at Bighorn in October. Wie has been hampered this year by wrist injuries, but is looking forward to returning to the Columbia-Edgewater Country Club.
“It's been a few years since I've played at the Safeway Classic, and I'm excited to be coming back,” said Wie. “Right now, I'm working on getting back to top form, and I'm hoping I will be all the way back by the time I come to Portland.”

Threats lead Boise State RB to hire security for wedding
BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State running back who scored the winning points in the Fiesta Bowl, then proposed to his cheerleader girlfriend on national television, says he has hired security for their wedding because of racial threats.
Ian Johnson, who is black, and Chrissy Popadics, who is white, are due to be married Saturday in Boise. Since his Jan. 1 proposal, Johnson said, he has received phone calls, letters and some personal threats from people who object to their marriage plans.
“It's really sad because a lot of people that are probably doing it are the same people who were cheering me on,” Johnson said.
