The Oregon Coast Music Association presents the 29th Oregon Coast Music Festival through July 28 with full symphony orchestra concerts and jazz, Celtic, bluegrass and chamber music. The festival began July 14 with a performance by the Bay Area Concert Band, but the bulk of the concert schedule lies ahead, with several this weekend.

Loose Acoustic Trio

Hailing from New York, Oklahoma and California, the Loose Acoustic Trio of Ken Cooper, Richie Lawrence and Steve O'Neill is a North American music sandwich. The band's music has been described as a brand new sound built up from considerably older roots - a cross between country music of the '30s and '40s, jugband music, and a variety of American ethnic traditions (polka, zydeco, conjunto), plus a little dollop of swing, all stirred together with some brand-new, old-style songs. Now based in Sacramento, the Loose Acoustic Trio writes songs about hats, corn, unrequited love, bothersome friends, breakfast, brains, and holding hands.

The band will offer a free workshop at 6 p.m. before tonight's concert at the Egyptian Theatre.

Festival Chamber Players

The Festival Chamber Players ensemble is made up of members of the Festival Orchestra: Greg Bishop on flute, Chip Phillips on clarinet, Steve Durnin on horn, Alan Juza on oboe, Thomas Schubert on bassoon and Kelli Brown Stephens on piano. The group's first performance - an oboe, bassoon and piano trio - will feature compositions by Francis Poulenc, Saint-Sëns, Britten and others. The second performance by the full sextet will feature selections by Poulenc, Arnold, Mozart and Barber.

Festival Orchestra

The Festival Orchestra is a remarkable assembly of regional, national and international musicians, many of whom have joined this festival for decades, under the direction of James Paul for two concerts and Jason Klein for a Pops concert.

Guest soloist Andrés Diaz will perform a work by Camille Saint-Saëns that is considered by many to be the greatest of all cello concertos. “Violoncello Concerto No. 1 in A-minor, Opus 33” involves the solo cello and the orchestra in a “conversation” in which one calls out and the other answers. And though it changes keys and themes, the piece is one single concerto and not divided into separate movements. The first orchestra concert also will include pieces by von Suppé and Schumann.

“Pirattitude!” is the theme of the Pops concert. Klein will lead the orchestra in performances of several pirate-inspired tunes, including two from “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies and the overtures from “Pirates of Penzance” and Le Corsair.”

The second orchestra concert will feature compositions by Mozart, Arnold and Strauss.
