A week after placing second at the Gibson Ford State Tune-Up Tournament, the Southern Oregon Coast softball team came away with another trophy finish last weekend at the ASA State Tournament in Junction City.
The SOCS finished fifth out of 21 teams at the three-day double-elimination tournament and strung together five wins after dropping their first game to La Grande's UC Lightning, 7-6 on Friday.
The Coos Bay club flirted with elimination in its opener Saturday but came away with a hard-fought 7-6 win over Lumbre of Salem. Chelsea Hitchcock put the game to rest in the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off RBI single, scoring Jayla Tavernier from second. It was one of three runs in the game for Tavernier, who went 3-for-4.
Tavernier highlighted a scoring spree in game three with a three-run home run, helping to lift the SOCS past Corvallis 15-8.
Tavernier finished 3-for-5 with three runs and four RBIs. Her Marshfield teammates Kayla Lyche and Brittney Young combined for a complete game, with Young yielding one hit in four innings.
Jessica Ott drove in two runs and doubled three times in four plate appearances, and Brianna Young tripled, also for Coos Bay.
The SOCS showed some of their seventh-inning magic again in game three.
With the scored tied at 3-3 going into the bottom half, Tiffany Wiley tapped a slow grounder to second that was deep enough to score Natalie Caffey from third.
Gold Beach's Molly Hockema started in the circle for the SOCS and struck out a dozen en route to earning the win. She allowed five hits.
George finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Reedsport's Tailor Nunn pitched a gem in game five, surrendering two hits in six innings as Coos Bay blanked the Jr. Eagles of Eagle Point 2-0. It capped a perfect 4-0 Saturday for the SOCS, who were one of just eight teams that advanced to play Sunday.
Young, George and Ott each went 2-for-3. Hockema struck out the side in the seventh to pick up the save.
Sunday's opener against Lake Oswego ended much like Saturday's for Coos Bay - a thrilling one-run victory that came down to the last inning.
With the game knotted at 3-3 in the seventh, Ott cranked a one-out triple, then scored the go-ahead run on a deep fly by Caffey.
Hockema tied the game with a two-run double in the sixth and picked up the win in relief of Lyche - the starter. Lyche lasted 2 1-3 innings.
The win clinched fifth place for the SOCS, who fell 10-2 to Beaverton's Murrayhill Magic in game seven.
