The area's club volleyball teams returned from the Volleyball Festival in Nevada with varying results.
The South Coast Fire had the highest overall ranking, finishing 64th in the 17-and-under division. The Tsunami Gold team had a high relative ranking, placing 97th out of 147 teams.
The North Bend Bulldogs 15-and-under team was 94th out of 111 squads, while the Pirates, a 16-and-under group, took 101st out of 187 teams. The North Bend Bulldogs 17-and-under squad tied for 81st.
Coaches for Tsunami and the South Coast Fire issued post-tournament reports.
Mick Pickett, who led Tsunami, said the team of seventh- through ninth-graders from Coos Bay had a hard-fought week of close finishes.
“The team exceeded (my) goal for the week of being within the 100 mark and came together as a team when needed,” Pickett said.
Conner Chard led the team with 18 aces and Kayla Smith also had a strong serving week. Victoria Giorgis was strong on defense and Shlly Burnett, the only freshman on the squad, tipped the ball well. Samantha Sundet was a strength in passing and at the net and Amber Owens had 12 blocks. Kara Young showed strong leadership and missed just two serves during the week. Nicole Roderick improved greatly on both offense and defense.
Pickett said the team wanted to thank the community and sponsors for their support.
Kyle Smith, meanwhile, was thrilled with the effort of the South Coast Fire.
“I am very proud of the way this team played this week,” he said. “When we showed up in Reno we met players and had never played together. We played some very good teams, but the girls fought hard all week.”
Smith thanked the team's sponsors, including Snuffy's Pawn Shop, Umpqua Bank, Roger and Donna Ott, Allegany Market and Vend West.
