The Southern Oregon Coast softball team from Coos Bay took second place last weekend in the Gibson Ford State Tune Up Tournament at Junction City.

The SOCS were without Brittney Young and Jessica Ott because of the Volleyball Festival in Nevada, but added Gold Beach's Molly Hockema, Katherine Zuber and Katie Walling to their lineup.

Coos Bay won its first four games before ending the tournament with a 9-4 loss to Ashland - a team the SOCS beat 8-7 in game two.

Hockema pitched 19 solid innings in the tournament, striking out 31 batters and picking up three wins. The first came against Grants Pass in game one - a 5-1 victory in which she struck out 11 batters. Zuber helped the cause with a solo home run in the third inning. Walling added a two-run double in the fourth.

In their second game at the tournament, the SOCS overcame a 5-4 deficit to beat Ashland.

“We had lost to Ashland at our last tournament 7-5, so it was a nice win,” Coos Bay co-coach Floyd Montiel said in a statement.

Zuber went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, and Jayla Tavernier and Tiffany Wiley both doubled in runs.

Tavernier, a Marshfield standout, batted .467 and had six doubles in the tournament.

Reedsport's Tailor Nunn pitched six-plus innings in game three, to lift the SOCS passed Sutherlin 2-1.

Nunn scattered four hits and fanned four before being lifted for Hockema, who earned the save.

Wiley and Tavernier provided all of Coos Bay's offensive output, driving in both runs.

The SOCS' fourth win of the tournament came against South Valley - a 9-1 decision in five innings.

Hockema tossed a one-hitter, and Tavernier went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Nunn scored two runs and hit safely in two of her three plate appearances.

The SOCS entered game five against Ashland with a shot at first place but were undone by six fielding errors. Those led to seven unearned scored by Ashland in the first three innings.

“We just came apart,” Montiel said.

Marshfield's Brianna George managed a 2-for-4 effort at the plate, and Walling crossed home three times while batting 2-for-3.
