The Three Rivers Sandblasters bounced back from a tough loss Monday to beat defending state champion Post 9 of Salem in dramatic fashion Tuesday.
Three Rivers improved to 6-2 in Zone 3 play by winning with a sparkling defensive play after errors cost the Sandblasters a win over the Springfield Titans a night earlier.
Three Rivers led Post 9 by one run with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth inning when Collin McClaughry induced a game-ending grounder. Shortstop Drew Rainwater gobbled up the ball and combined with second baseman Shane Rose and first baseman David Deutschman for the clinching outs in the 8-7 victory.
“The last play of the game was a very good play,” said Three Rivers coach Corky Franklin. “You go out and play really good defense and pitch well, you'll have chances to win.”
Tyler Mais scored the winning run when he tripled to lead off the ninth and came home on a single by Rose.
Mais, Deutschman and Travis Anderson each had two hits, while Rose had three hits and three RBIs. Scott Buche added two RBIs for Three Rivers.
The win was sweet because the Sandblasters blew three-run leads in the eighth and ninth innings on Monday against Springfield when two-out grounders got under the gloves of infielders.
“Bouncing back was important,” Franklin said. “We played pretty good defense.”
Three Rivers had two errors Tuesday after seven miscues Monday.
The Sandblasters lost 14-13 in 11 innings Monday against the Titans, the winning run scoring when Springfield's Cameron Dixon was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The real damage came in agonizing fashion with the errors in the eighth and ninth innings after Three Rivers had scored three runs in the top of each inning.
“That was pretty typical with the way we went about our defense,” Franklin said. “It's pretty hard to win when you can't play catch.”
The poor defense by the Sandblasters on Monday offset a strong offensive night that saw the team score five runs in the third inning and two in the seventh before the three-run eighth and ninth.
“Lately, it's been really inconsistent,” Franklin said. “Sometimes we show up to play defense and sometimes we don't.”
Tyler Mais was 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs for the Sandblasters and Cole Skriver and Drew Rainwater each also had three hits. Travis Anderson added two hits for Three Rivers.
The Sandblasters host Richey's Market of Corvallis today at 3 p.m. The Corvallis club is the only one the Sandblasters didn't beat the first time through the league schedule.
