Pfc. Jeremy Marshall-Hill of Charleston was among the Oregon National Guard soldiers who mobilized this weekend for a tour of duty in Iraq. The 234th Engineer Company, based out of Warrenton, will deploy more than 180 soldiers to Camp Shelby, Miss., for about two months of training before heading to Balad, Iraq. Once there, the company will conduct transport security operations.

“We'll primarily be providing security for the civilian-contractor convoys,” said Capt. Jeffrey S. Brown, the company's commander, in a press release. “The key is to keep the vehicles rolling out there.”

Some of the soldiers who are heading overseas previously served on homeland security missions at Fort Lewis, Wash., and at the Umatilla Chemical Weapons Depot in Umatilla. Others deployed with the 52nd Engineers when it went to Iraq in February 2003.

On Sunday, Gov. Ted Kulongoski, Maj. Gen. Raymond Rees and Brig. Gen. Charles Yriarte attended the 234th Engineer's mobilization ceremonies at the Salem Armory.

Spc. Crystal Adams, of Coos Bay; Sgt. Michael Carr, of Lakeside; Pfc. Robert Cole, of North Bend; and Spc. Joseph Whitney, of Florence previously deployed with the 224th Engineer Company in June.
