Friday, July 6, 2007 11:25 AM PDT

A car crashed into a culvert and smashed a mailbox on Shinglehouse Road south of Coos Bay today.

According to an Oregon State Police press release, at about 12:10 a.m., a Toyota Celica traveling east on Shinglehouse Road veered off the roadway, struck a culvert, before spinning across the road, crashing into a mailbox and landing in the ditch. The driver and the passenger exited the vehicle to inspect the damage and the driver fled the area.

OSP troopers said they arrived on scene to discover the passenger, no name or information available, standing alongside the road where the crash occurred. She told troopers she had requested a ride from an unknown neighbor and following the crash, the driver fled the scene.

The passenger offered to provide compensation for the damaged mailbox and officers removed the vehicle from the ditch and towed it to a nearby residence.

No further information was available.
