East Bay gardens featured in tour

This year's eighth-annual Town and Country Garden Tour features six gardens near the shores of Coos Bay. The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 4, along the East Bay Drive greater area.

The tour will feature gardens from works in progress to very mature plantings, including:

€ The Bracelin garden: a 37-year effort to overcome blackberry bushes to make way for meandering footpaths. This woodland setting features lush ferns under tree canopies enhanced by natural and man-made streams and a fish pond. One of the paths leads to an orchard.

€ The French garden: This garden features a self-designed copper-roofed gazebo, arbor and pond, which form the centerpiece of this mature sylvan setting.

€ The Moon garden: A familiar landmark to those who travel East Bay Drive, eight colorful wooden doors mark this unique garden. A robust honeysuckle bush cascades over the side wall and poppies frame the home. A “welcome” sign awaits those who enter the garden, tucked away into its own magical world.

€ The Hill garden: A newly built greenhouse, designed and constructed to match the home in both line and color, is the headquarters of this enterprise. The whimsical art in this garden is a result of keen eyes at many a garage sale. The garden offers examples of native and drought-tolerant plants.

€ The Evans garden: This Glasgow garden represents the owner's tribute to Butchart Gardens in British Columbia, Canada. The front yard boasts a welcoming fisherman statue along with stone paths and a bird bath. The backyard features fruits and vegetables, flowers and mature shrubs with a water feature, under a complex pergola.

€ The Tabor garden: Two years of self design and labor have resulted in a series of terraces serving as a pedestal for the house. Future plans for this work in progress include a water feature.

Tickets are on sale at Coos Bay Grange and Coos Bay Farr's Hardware. Proceeds support the Coos Bay Garden Club's annual $1,000 Marshfield High School scholarship.
