The North Coos Waterfront bounced back from a tough loss in the opener to pound South Eugene in the nightcap, splitting the team's first doubleheader of the American Legion league season on Sunday in Eugene.
North Coos scored twice in the sixth inning of the opener to take a 3-2 lead on South Eugene, but the host team scored a run in each of the last two innings for a 4-3 victory.
After getting just four hits in the loss, North Coos had 10 hits in the second game, including three for extra bases, in a 9-2 victory.
Bryce Weidman was solid on the mound in the first game, pitching the first six innings and giving up just five hits while striking out nine batters and walking one. Neal Vaught came on for the seventh inning and allowed a walk and two singles, the latter driving in the winning run.
“We struck out a few too many times in the first (game) and that stranded some runners for us,” North Coos coach Brad Horning said. “We got pretty good pitching, but not quite enough support for them.”
Two of the Waterfront's four hits came in the sixth inning. Jake Stevens singled and Vaught reached on an error, with Stevens scoring on the play. Weidman then drove Vaught in with a single.
In the nightcap, Vaught went 4-for-5, with a double, scoring one run and driving in another. Tyler Lancaster was 2-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases.
Vaught and Adam Opoien had doubles and Weidman had a triple.
Vaught also pitched the first five innings, with Kale Forrester finishing the game on the mound.
North Coos hosts Roseburg Pepsi on Thursday, with the first pitch in the opener scheduled for 5 p.m. at Clyde Allen Ball Park in North Bend.
