Three of the five South Coast teams at the Volleyball Festival in Nevada moved up in the rankings on the first day of competition Monday.

The South Coast Fire, a 17-and-under team, has the highest ranking among the local clubs after moving up five spots to No. 46.

The Fire lost to Saddleback Valley, the third-ranked team in the 17-and-under division, 25-11, 25-12. The local team bounced back to beat San Diego 17-25, 26-24, 15-8 before losing to Rogue Valley, a team of all-stars from Medford and Ashland, 25-18, 25-13.

Coach Kyle Smith said Vanessa Cardoso and Nicole Zyta both had outstanding matches hitting on the opening day of the tournament.

The Pirates, a 16-and-under team coached by Bill Gauer, made the biggest jump among local clubs, from 182nd to 134th in their age group.

The team beat the Pendleton Bucs 25-15, 25-19 before losing two matches, to Spectrum of California (25-21, 25-18) and Epic of San Diego (25-14, 25-11). The Pirates beat the Northwest Juniors Avalanche Team from Longview, Wash., 25-13, 25-21.

The North Bend Bulldogs 15-and-under team jumped from 108th to 75th with two wins in four matches.

The Bulldogs lost to No. 11 Club Pacific Asics 25-19, 25-18; beat Sierra Nevada 25-22, 25-21; lost to Laguna Beach 22-25, 25-7, 15-8; and edged SMBC 26-24, 24-26, 15-10.

The North Bend Bulldogs 17-and-under team stayed at No. 71, losing three matches.

The Bulldogs fell 25-10, 25-5 to TVVC 17, 25-5, 25-12 to Storm 1 and 25-8, 25-12 to Spectrum 17.

The other area team dropped slightly.

Tsunami, a 14-and-under team, lost two of its three matches and fell from 74th to 87th.

Tsunami lost 25-12, 25-19 to the Redland Tigers and 25-8, 25-10 to Surfside before beating Kern River Bronze 25-22, 25-16.

Nicole Roderick, Amber Owens and Kara Young had strong matches for the team.

The tournament in the Reno and Sparks area continues most of this week.More than 630 teams are competing in six age groups.
