Dawson's golf classic scheduled for July 21

The annual Dawson's Summer Charity Golf Classic is scheduled for July 21 at Coquille Valley Elks Lodge.

All proceeds from the tournament go to the Community Food Cupboard.

The tournament begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The entry fee is $40 and a can of food and includes lunch and prizes after the tournament.

Golfers can choose their own foursome to play with during the tournament, though the teams for the competition will be randomly drawn.

The event is limited to the first 72 golfers who sign up. Players must be at least 21 to enter.

For more information, those interested can pick up an entry form at Dawson's Stein Room, 295 Central Ave., in downtown Coos Bay.

Jennifer's Catching Slough Classic

Eric Engles of Coos Bay won the overall championship in the 10-mile run/walk at Jennifer's Catching Slough Classic last Saturday.

Engles battled a fierce headwind in the last 5 miles to finish in a time of 72 minutes and 52 seconds, one second faster than his second-place effort last year. He was followed by Joe Walker of North Bend (73:54) and Jerry Gentry of Salem (76:10).

The women were led by Dustina Coleman of North Bend, fourth overall in 76:53. Liz Harbert of Albany (77:03) and Sara Marroquin of Charleston (84:19) were second and third.

In the 5-kilometer run/walk, Steven Garboden of North Bend finished first in 16:58. He was followed by Matthew Collins of Eugene (19:54) and Jana Sadler of Coos Bay, the women's champion. Sadler's time of 21:14 was an age-group record.

The inaugural 10-kilometer run was won by Sarah Leahy of Coos Bay in 48:15. Chuck McLauchlin of Bandon (60:46) and Joe Hallett of Powers took second and third.

Masters (ages 40 and over) awards went to Walker and Harbert for the 10-mile, Peter Crosby of North Bend (29:22) and Karen Matson of Coos Bay (23:59) for the 5K and Hallett for the 10K.

Cephran Sinko of Myrtle Point repeated as champion in the 1-mile kids run in 9:38, almost a minute faster than last year. Emily Turman of Coos Bay was second (13:53) and Teal Hamner was third.

The event, sponsored by the South Coast Running Club, served as a fundraiser for the Jennifer Turman Memorial Scholarship, awarded annually to one or more Coos County senior cross country or track distance runners.

Pool league sanctioned

The Pacific Coast Pool League was recently sanctioned by both the Billiards Congress of America and the Western Billiards Congress of America, which allows players in the league to participate in regional and national tournaments.

The league, which has matches every Tuesday night, includes six teams.

To date, Tiny's 2 has a slight edge over Silver Dollar, 625 to 616 points in the cumulative season point totals.

Standings are included in today's Community Scoreboard.

Wacky Softball Tournament planned

The Coquille Booster Club will host the Wacky Co-Ed Softball Tournament on Aug. 4 and 5 at Lincoln Elementary School in Coquille.

The event, which is a double-elimination tournament, will start at 9 a.m. Teams are guaranteed at least three games. The entry fee is $100 per team.

Proceeds will benefit the Coquille Booster Club, which supports athletic programs in the school district.

The tournament is a “wacky” event because each inning comes with different rules. The first inning will have regular play, while the second inning players must bat with their off hands. The third inning will include just one pitch per batter and the fourth will be played with a mush ball and no gloves. In the fifth inning, players run the bases backward, while in the sixth, a random draw will be held for all positions but pitcher.

Other rules include alternating between male and female players in the field and in the lineup, a time limit of one hour per game, no alcohol and no sliding.

For more information, those interested can contact Abrie Gillaspie at 396-6377 (home) or 260-3371 (cell) or Crystal Gederos at 396-4539.
