There are many published authors throughout the South Coast. Although most of them work with a self-publishing company, the works of local writers can be found at booksellers and libraries throughout the region. Just a few writers who published books recently include authors from North Bend, Port Orford, Winston and Coos Bay.

Susan Anderson Coons' book, “The Lighthouse Mouse,” is available at Books By the Bay bookstore in North Bend, Winter River Books in Bandon, Kinnee's Gifts in Charleston and the Umpqua River Lighthouse gift shop.

n Coons will sign books and discuss the writing and illustrating process for her latest publication, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 30, at Books by the Bay bookstore, 1875 Sherman Ave., in North Bend.

Jayel Gibson, a writer from Port Orford, has published several novels in the Ancient Mirrors Tales series, including “The Wrekening,” and “The Dragon Queen,” “Into Abaddon's Abyss” and “Damselflies,” which will be available in November. Gibson's books are available at Gold Beach Books, 29707 Ellensburg Ave., in Gold Beach and several Coos County libraries.

n Gibson will sign books and discuss her works at the Port Orford Realms of Fantasy Event, from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4, at Battle Rock park, south of town along U.S. Highway 101, in Port Orford; and will be the featured writer at Author's Night at the Coos Bay Public Library, 525 Anderson Ave., in Coos Bay, from 7 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 16.

Areta Bass Steele, a writer from Winston, recently published a children's book “Amazing Mr. Frog,” which includes a whimsical and educational story that emphasizes cooperation and friendship. Steele's book may be available at bookstores and libraries soon.

The NakedWednesday's Writers Group, a Bay Area writers group including Ina Christensen, Sandy Kretzschmar, Betty Wetzel and many others, published a collection of the group's best works last year. “Naked Wednesdays, A Writers Group's Literary Journal” is available at local bookstores and libraries. The group's second collection of stories and essays also is available at Books by the Bay.
