Off the shelf

South Coast readers often have different preferences in reading material than those in other parts of the state and United States. Here are the top-five sellers this week at Books By the Bay in North Bend, according to owner Trish Price:
“Empire of Blue Water: Captain Morgan's Great Pirate Army, the Epic Battle for the Americas, and the Catastrophe That Ended the Outlaws' Bloody Reign” by Stephanie Talty is the real-life story of Henry Morgan, the legendary pirate of the Caribbean.
“Just a Guy: Notes from a Blue Collar Life” by funnyman Bill Engvall is a hilarious memoir about his path from small town Texas to fame and fortune.
“I'm Chevy Chase Š and You're Not” by Rena Fruchter is yet another famous funnyman's memoir. Only this one shows the darker side Chase had to overcome.
Paulo Coelho's “The Witch of Portabello” chronicles the life of Athena, as told by the many people who knew her well or hardly at all. Like Coelho's previous novels, this is the kind of story that can transform the way readers think about love and sacrifice.
Anything “Transformer”! Kids are going crazy over “Transformer” books, getting prepared for the movie on July 4.
