Chef takes a step beyond ice sculpting

Chris Foltz' chain saw sculpture, “Goodnight, Neverland,” left, is on display on Sunday at the Oregon Divisional Chainsaw Sculpting Championships in Reedsport. Foltz, like other carvers, worked on his masterpiece for four days over the Father's Day weekend. Foltz, the executive sous chef at The Mill Casino-Hotel, also does ice carvings. “Goodnight, Neverland” was his attempt to recreate his favorite ice sculpture, “The Man in the Moon,” above. Foltz, spent the first two days of the contest carving the moon portion of the sculpture and then put the waves and the reflection in over the weekend. There are three panels on the back of the sculpture's base, depicting other scenes from “Captain Hook.” On one of the panels is a sketch of the tree the Lost Boys called home, and on another is Hook's ship. The final panel has the words “Goodnight, Neverland” written into it. The theme of this year's event was “Once Upon A Time.” Foltz's wooden sculpture is approximately seven feet tall.
