The Northwest Girls Open Chess Challenge is an annual event to promote chess playing among young women. Coquille has a reputation for strong players and sent a large contingent to the event.
Sarai Perkins took advantage of the opportunity to play World Grand Master Elena Donaldson in a simultaneous demonstration where Elena played 15 challengers all at the same time. Sarai reports that she was thrilled to meet a chess hero and put up a valiant effort but was ultimately defeated.
Final results of the five-round main event include Tasha Daily as the fourth-place winner, followed by Hailey Riley, who won third-place in the third-fifth grades. |
