Plants

Feeders and flowers are good for attracting hummingbirds to a yard. The nectar gives them energy, but they need insects, too, which serve as protein for building muscle. Flowerwise:
€ choose plants with bright red, orange or red-orange tubular-shaped blossoms.
€ plant nectar flowers, shrubs and trees that will bloom from spring to fall, for a continual source of food.
€ spring and early summer flowers include: bleeding heart, columbine, fuschia, lupine, petunias, phlox and sweet William.
€ summer into fall flowers include: bee balm, butterfly bush (considered a noxious weed), dahlia, hollyhock, four-o-clock, zinnia, cardinal flower, beard tongue (penstemon), scarlet gilia and sage (salvia), to name a few.
€ Shrubs include azaleas, wild Indian plum, red elderberry, red flowering current and flowering quince. Hummingbirds also feed on the nectar of hawthorne, horse chestnut and flowering crabapple trees. Vines include twin berry, morning glory, clematis, trumpet creeper, honeysuckle and scarlet runner bean.
