Women from the Star of Hope Activity Center in Coos Bay have taken on the challenge of cleaning out the weeds and overgrown plants in the bump-outs in Empire. From left, Shelly Bacon, of North Bend; Hayley Hatchison, of Coos Bay; and Louann Dewater, of Coos Bay, work on the bump-outs in the 600 block of Newmark Avenue on Wednesday afternoon. Hatchison groans as she digs a stubborn bush. The women work for Star of Hope, and they have been working on the plant project for the past week or so. Some plants have been trimmed back so more flowers will appear and in some of the spots, new plants will be added.
