CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - John Scaglione, David Adams and Beau Seabury strung together three consecutive RBI singles in the top of the 13th inning as first-seeded Virginia remained undefeated in the Charlottesville Regional with a 7-4 victory over third-seeded, defending champion Oregon State on Saturday evening at Davenport Field.
“It was a long baseball game, we had some opportunities, but we weren't able to capitalize on them,” Oregon State coach Pat Casey said.
Now the Beavers must beat Rutgers today, in a game postponed by rain on Sunday, and then top Virginia twice to advance to the super regionals for the third straight year.
Jacob Thompson pitched 6 1/3 innings for the Cavaliers (45-14), holding the Beavers to three runs on five hits. The sophomore right-hander struck out four and walked four.
He was replaced in the seventh by Casey Lambert, Virginia's all-time saves leader. Lambert (3-2) pitched the final 6 2-3 innings and earned the victory, allowing one run on four hits and striking out seven.
With the score tied 2-2 in the sixth inning, Darwin Barney gave Oregon State a one-run advantage with a homer that cleared the bleachers in left field.
But Virginia evened things up in the top of the seventh with two outs when Patrick Wingfield lined a base hit to center that drove in Beau Seabury.
The score would remain knotted at three until the top of the tenth. Tim Henry gave Virginia the lead with a sacrifice fly to right but Mitch Canham came through with an RBI two-out base hit in the bottom of the inning to keep Oregon State alive.
In the top of the 13th, Tim Henry led off with a single and stole second. He then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Patrick Mitchell. Sean Doolittle was intentionally walked, bringing up Scaglione, who had entered the game in the sixth inning as the replacement for an injured Brandon Guyer.
“I was hitting my spots where I wanted to hit, but he just hit my pitch,” Beavers pitcher Eddie Kuntz said of Scaglione's hit.
Henry finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. David Adams also was 3-for-6 with an RBI. Mike Stutes pitched 6 1-3 innings for the Beavers (39-18), yielding two runs on five hits. The junior righthander struck out nine and walked five. Kunz (2-1) came on in the eighth and pitched 4 2-3 innings, taking the loss.
