The following are statistics from the 2005-06 Coos County Public Health annual report released earlier this year.

€ Department established in 1922.

€ Adopted budget: $3 million

€ Funding: federal government about 33 percent, miscellaneous fees about 28 percent, county general fund 12 percent, dedicated state funds 5.7 percent, client fees at 5.4 percent, grants and donations fund 4.4 percent and the Oregon Health Plan funds 1.3 percent among other sources.

€ employment: 41 employees, with the equivalent of 35.41 full-time positions.

€ top services provided: health clinic for family planning, immunizations, HIV testing, cancer prevention and disease tracking; inspections for food service, motels, pools, water sources, illness investigation; home visit programs for new parents and young children; prevention services for tobacco use, pregnancy, alcohol and drug use, diabetes and asthma; and the Women Infants & Children nutrition program.

€ Coos County ranks third in the state for incidence of cancers, much is due to the high incidence of smoking.

€ No. 1 in state for lung cancer

€ No. 3 in state for melanoma

€ No. 4 in state for oral and pharyngeal cancer

€ No. 7 in state for colon and rectal cancer

€ No. 7 in state for child abuse

€ No. 4 in state for poverty, with 16 percent of the population living in poverty

€ 20 percent of children live in poverty; almost 39 percent of single mothers live in poverty

€ teen pregnancy rate declined over five years from 10.2 to 7.3 per 1,000. County also saw declines in low-birth weights in babies and the number of mothers who received no prenatal care.

€ County gave 2,043 immunizations in year, not including flu shots.

€ 1,727 residents used the family planning clinic, for 3,058 visits

€ the department investigated 314 reports of communicable disease; and served 24 HIV/AIDS infected clients.

€ screened 173 women in the breast and cervical cancer prevention program; with screening detecting three breast cancer cases and 10 cervical or precervical cancer cases.

€ staff made 2,577 home visits to pregnant women, infants and young children.
